Local streets and practice areas
Where instructors typically take Viewpoint students, from quiet residential streets to freeway on-ramps.
Viewpoint students practice on a mix of residential streets, multi-lane roads, and freeway on-ramps near Calabasas. Each lesson is paced to the student - starting slower and building toward independent driving.
Main streets
- Residential streets near Paul Revere Dr This residential area off Mulholland Hwy gives students a chance to slow things down and build confidence step by step. The quieter streets are useful for practicing turns, stop signs, speed management, and the everyday decisions that come with neighborhood driving.
- Mulholland Hwy Mulholland Hwy can help students transition from neighborhood driving to a larger road environment. It provides experience with intersection management, lane positioning, changing road layouts, and sharing the road with cyclists.
- Old Topanga Canyon Rd Old Topanga Canyon Rd can be useful once a student is ready for a less predictable road than a typical neighborhood street. The curves and fewer intersections give students practice with speed control, lane position, scanning ahead, and staying smooth through longer stretches of driving.
- Las Virgenes Rd Once basic skills feel comfortable, Las Virgenes Rd can introduce students to a busier driving environment. Multiple lanes, regular stoplights, and larger intersections help build confidence handling more traffic and more frequent decisions.
Key intersections
- Valmar Rd and Park Ora Rd This intersection can be a good next step for students who are comfortable with stop signs and ready to practice at an intersection with a stoplight. The relatively manageable traffic levels allow students to work on timing turns, recognizing signal changes, and building confidence around other vehicles.
- Mulholland Hwy and Valmar Rd Students can gain experience handling a larger intersection while managing traffic coming from several directions. This location is useful for practicing lane position, approaching traffic lights at appropriate speeds, and making turns while staying aware of surrounding vehicles.
- Mulholland Hwy and Old Topanga Canyon Rd This busy intersection gives more experienced students an opportunity to practice driving in a complex traffic environment. Multiple turn options, traffic lights, and nearby bike lanes encourage students to stay alert, choose the correct lane, and watch carefully for both vehicles and cyclists as they move through the intersection.
Freeway on-ramps near Viewpoint
- Las Virgenes Rd (southbound) onto the 101 N This on-ramp is a good choice for beginner freeway students because drivers can enter the 101 North and continue to the nearby Lost Hills Rd exit if they are not yet comfortable merging into faster traffic. Traffic volume is often moderate to heavy, but the nearby exit provides an easy fallback option while students build confidence.
- Las Virgenes Rd (southbound) onto the 101 S This on-ramp requires drivers to merge into active freeway traffic rather than continuing into a dedicated lane. Traffic heading eastbound toward Los Angeles can be heavy, making this location more appropriate for intermediate students who are comfortable with freeway-speed driving and gap selection.
- Lost Hills Rd (northbound) onto the 101 S The Lost Hills Rd northbound on-ramp to the 101 South features a relatively comfortable freeway entry because the entrance lane continues onto the freeway as a dedicated lane. Students can accelerate to freeway speed without needing to make an immediate merge decision, which helps reduce stress. With moderate to heavy traffic common on the 101, this ramp is an excellent choice for beginner and lower-intermediate students building freeway confidence.
- Valley Circle Blvd (southbound) onto the 101 N Valley Circle Blvd onto the 101 North can be a useful advanced practice ramp because the challenge starts before the freeway entry. After the all-way stop, traffic from nearby streets comes together before the ramp, so students need to watch their spacing, lane position, and timing before they begin accelerating. The acceleration area gives some room to build speed, but 101 traffic can be busy, so this is best for students who are already comfortable with faster traffic and basic merging.
Practice hours, the 50-hour rule, and what to do at home
What to do between sessions, and how California's requirements shape the process.
California requires two things before a teen can apply for a driver's license:
- Minimum 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school (this is what our lesson packages cover)
- Minimum 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a parent, guardian, or licensed instructor. At least 10 hours must be at night
The 50 hours can be tracked using our free California driving log. Individual or custom lessons with our instructors count toward this total.
Students who want more time with an instructor beyond their standard package can book individual or custom lessons at any point. These are a great option for:
- Extra practice on specific skills (freeway driving, parking, canyon roads)
- Logging additional hours toward the 50-hour DMV requirement
- Night driving practice with a licensed instructor (counts toward the required 10 nighttime hours)
- Building confidence before the DMV road test
If individual lessons sound useful, mention it when you sign up, or get in touch once your package is completed.
Practice what was covered in the most recent lesson before advancing to anything new.
- Quiet residential streets with minimal traffic
- Empty public parking lots (school or shopping center off-hours)
- Avoid jumping to busier roads or freeway until the instructor confirms the student is ready
Students who practice between lessons advance significantly faster. Less time reviewing old material means more time building new skills.
We typically recommend spacing lessons across the 6 months students hold their learner's permit. This allows time for real supervised practice between sessions, and helps each lesson build meaningfully on the last. That said, every family's schedule is different. We work around school, sports, and activities.
This is completely understandable and far more common than people assume. Families should never feel pressure to practice beyond their comfort level. Just wait for the next lesson. The instructor will check readiness and take it from there.
Test day, handled: refresher lessons and full prep
Most Viewpoint students use one or both of these before test day. They work well together.
A targeted lesson 1-2 weeks before your scheduled test. Your instructor runs through DMV expectations, conducts a mock road test, identifies habits that could cost points, and builds confidence before test day.
If you've already booked your own DMV appointment, let us know the location. We'll do our best to practice in that area beforehand, within legal limits. Note that DMVs prohibit driving the actual test route during active business hours, but we know the surrounding roads well and can prepare your student accordingly.
This lesson works great on its own, and pairs naturally with the day-of test prep below.
Of all our options, this is the easiest one for families to manage. After you book the DMV Test Prep package, we work with you to land a DMV appointment that aligns with your schedule and our availability for instructor and vehicle. The scheduling burden lifts off you. Just one heads-up: if you choose this package, please skip booking your own DMV slot, since we may not be available on a self-selected date.
On test day, we pick your student up about an hour before the appointment, warm up with focused practice near the DMV, then drive to the test in our licensed, insured, and test-ready vehicle. Our instructor checks the student in, makes sure all paperwork is in order, and provides last-minute tips and a confidence boost right before the examiner arrives.
No need to provide a car, arrange a ride, or sort out DMV logistics. We take care of everything.

For current students and families
Day-to-day questions about lessons, pick-up, and progress.
Most Calabasas families choose home pick-up, since it is the most convenient option. Your instructor arrives directly at your front door at the scheduled time, greets the student, and when a parent is around, briefly walks through the plan beforehand and shares progress at drop-off.
Each lesson has a 15-minute arrival window to allow for traffic. Once your instructor arrives, the full scheduled lesson time is taught in its entirety. No portion gets cut for a late start.
A convenient option on school days or after activities. Students can meet us at or near the large parking lot on Mulholland Hwy. Our vehicles have a large leaf logo on the side. The instructor will exit to greet your student when safe, or your student can approach and enter directly.
Pick-up and drop-off can sometimes be different locations. For example, picked up at Viewpoint School and dropped at home.
Each lesson is followed by a personal written assessment, emailed to both the student and parent. The report breaks down what was covered, how the student performed, and what to focus on before next time. If a parent is around at drop-off, your instructor will also walk through it in person for a few minutes.
Practice what your most recent lesson covered. The progress report will spell out specifics, but the general principle is simple: get comfortable with what you just learned before stepping up to anything more advanced.
- Quiet residential streets, good for Level 1 review
- Empty parking lots, good for parking, turning circles, and low-stakes maneuvering
- Main streets throughout Calabasas once residential driving is solid
If you and your parent or guardian are not comfortable practicing a particular skill between lessons, just wait for the next lesson. Don't push into situations that feel unsafe.
We have both male and female instructors on staff, and you can read bios before booking any lesson. Vehicle choice is also flexible: pick between our Toyota Prius and Lexus SUV, both fitted with dual brake controls for instructor safety.
Instructor and vehicle preferences are accommodated based on availability and are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis at time of booking.
Most Viewpoint students test at Winnetka DMV (our top recommendation for this school). See the DMV section above for full details.
Plenty of students combine both of our test prep options for the strongest setup: a refresher lesson a few days before the road test to sharpen any rough edges, plus our full DMV Test Prep package on the day of the test, where we handle the appointment, bring our licensed and insured vehicle, check the student in, and offer a confidence boost just before the examiner arrives. The two work well in sequence.
