Inside our DTHS driving lessons
Lessons are taught in stages. Most driving school students in West Hills do 6 or 10 hours total, advancing through levels based on readiness and real-world practice between sessions.
Level 1: Residential foundations
Vehicle basics, steering, braking, right-of-way, and low-traffic West Hills neighborhood streets to build comfort and control.
Level 2: City streets and traffic
Turns, lane changes, speed control, intersections, and main West Hills roads with real traffic flow.
Level 3: Review and freeway intro
Cumulative skill review, first freeway introduction when ready, and a mock DMV assessment to gauge progress.
Level 4: Freeway driving
Freeway entry, merging, lane discipline, safe following distance, and I.P.D.E. defensive driving technique.
Level 5: Canyons and defensive driving
Real-world driving on roads near West Hills, with a focus on speed control, hazard awareness, and situational judgment.
DMV refresher + day-of test prep
Mock test, common mistake review, confidence building, and use of our vehicle for the road test.

Local streets and practice areas
Where instructors typically take DTHS students, from quiet residential streets to freeway on-ramps.
Learning to drive is easier when students build skills step by step. de Toledo students can start with neighborhood streets before moving on to busier roads and more complex traffic situations.
Main streets
- Residential streets south of Vanowen St and west of Shoup Ave This nearby residential pocket gives students a quieter place to settle in before moving toward busier school-area streets. When conditions are calm, it may be useful for practicing speed control, smooth braking, stop sign decisions, curbside parking, and basic turns while staying alert for pedestrians, parked cars, and school zone activity.
- Vanowen St Vanowen St is a busier West Hills road with multiple lanes, stoplights, lane changes, and faster-moving traffic. Lessons here can help students hold a safe lane position, manage speed, change lanes carefully, and stay alert as traffic builds or opens up.
- Fallbrook Ave Fallbrook Ave is useful once a student is ready for a busier local road with multiple lanes, bike lanes, stoplights, and frequent driveway activity. Practice here can help with smooth speed control, safe lane positioning, and scanning for cars turning into and out of shopping center parking lots.
Key intersections
- Sale Ave and Criswell St Sale Ave and Criswell St is a residential all-way stop near a school zone, best used when traffic is calm. It can help newer students practice full stops, scanning for pedestrians, and simple left and right turns without the pressure of a traffic signal.
- Vanowen St and Shoup Ave Vanowen St and Shoup Ave is a multi-lane signalized intersection that is better for students who already handle basic neighborhood driving well. It can help students practice traffic lights, lane position, left and right turns, crosswalk scanning, and staying calm with moderate to heavier traffic.
- Victory Blvd and Fallbrook Ave Victory Blvd and Fallbrook Ave can be useful for intermediate students who are ready to handle a busier, multi-lane intersection. It gives practice with signal timing, left and right turns, lane positioning, crosswalk awareness, and scanning through steady traffic. Traffic may feel more demanding during school, commute, or shopping-center hours, so it is best introduced when conditions are appropriate for the student’s skill level.
Freeway on-ramps near DTHS
- Topanga Canyon Blvd onto the 118 E This 118 East on-ramp gives advanced students a real freeway entry experience without feeling overly complicated. The longer build-up helps with acceleration, but the merge still requires steady scanning, good timing, and comfort with faster traffic.
- Topanga Canyon Blvd onto the 101 S Topanga Canyon Blvd onto the 101 South has a shorter acceleration area and can require a quicker, more confident merge into busy freeway traffic. It is better suited for students who already have some freeway practice, not a first freeway entry.
Practice hours, the 50-hour rule, and what to do at home
What to do between sessions, and how California's requirements shape the process.
There are two California requirements that must be met before a teen can apply for their license:
- Minimum 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school (this is what our lesson packages cover)
- Minimum 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a parent, guardian, or licensed instructor. At least 10 hours must be at night
The 50 hours can be tracked using our free California driving log. Individual or custom lessons with our instructors count toward this total.
Beyond the standard package, students can add individual or custom lessons whenever they want. They are useful for:
- Extra practice on specific skills (freeway driving, parking, canyon roads)
- Logging additional hours toward the 50-hour DMV requirement
- Night driving practice with a licensed instructor (counts toward the required 10 nighttime hours)
- Building confidence before the DMV road test
Ask us about individual lesson options when you sign up or after completing your package.
Stick with what was covered in the last lesson before moving on to anything new. Familiar West Hills streets are perfect for this kind of low-pressure repetition.
- Quiet residential streets with minimal traffic
- Empty public parking lots (school or shopping center off-hours)
- Avoid jumping to busier roads or freeway until the instructor confirms the student is ready
Students who put in regular practice between lessons progress noticeably faster. Less time spent revisiting old material means more time learning new skills.
We typically recommend spacing lessons across the 6 months students hold their learner's permit. This allows time for real supervised practice between sessions, and helps each lesson build meaningfully on the last. That said, every family's schedule is different. We work around school, sports, and activities.
Completely understandable, and more common than you might think. Families should never feel pressure to practice beyond their comfort level. Simply wait until the next lesson. The instructor will assess readiness and take it from there.
Test day, handled: refresher lessons and full prep
Most DTHS students use one or both of these before test day. They work well together.
This is a single targeted lesson, usually scheduled 1-2 weeks before the test. The instructor reviews DMV expectations, runs a mock road test, points out any habits that could cost points, and gets the student dialed in before test day.
If you have already booked your DMV appointment, share the location with us. We will work to practice nearby beforehand, within legal limits. Keep in mind that DMVs prohibit driving the actual test route during business hours, but our instructors know the roads around local DMV offices well and can prepare your student for similar driving conditions.
The refresher lesson works well on its own, and pairs naturally with the day-of test prep package below.
Of all our options, this is the easiest one for families to manage. After you book the DMV Test Prep package, we work with you to land a DMV appointment that aligns with your schedule and our availability for instructor and vehicle. The scheduling burden lifts off you. Just one heads-up: if you choose this package, please skip booking your own DMV slot, since we may not be available on a self-selected date.
On test day, we pick your student up about an hour before the appointment. West Hills families often appreciate the warm-up portion: we run focused practice on streets near the testing DMV, then drive to the appointment in our licensed, insured, and test-ready vehicle. The instructor handles check-in, confirms paperwork, and offers last-minute tips and a confidence boost right before the examiner arrives.
No need to provide a car, arrange a ride, or sort out DMV logistics. We take care of everything.
Which DMV should West Hills students use?
Our recommendations are based on recent student pass trends, route predictability, and local traffic conditions.
Choosing the right DMV can make a meaningful difference. Most of our guidance is based on ongoing data from student road tests, not just general reputation.

Quick guide for active DTHS families
Quick answers on pick-up, progress reports, practice, and next steps.
Home pick-up is the most popular option, and the most convenient for most families. The instructor arrives at your front door at the scheduled time, greets the student, and (when a parent is around) briefly goes over the lesson plan beforehand and shares progress notes at drop-off.
There is a 15-minute arrival window built into every lesson to account for traffic. Lesson time is always taught in full from the moment the instructor arrives, with no portion shaved off because of a delayed start.
A convenient option on school days or after activities. Students can meet us at or near the main parking lot on Vanowen St in front of the school. Our vehicles have a large leaf logo on the side. The instructor will exit to greet your student when safe, or your student can approach and enter directly.
Pick-up and drop-off can sometimes be different locations. For example, picked up at de Toledo High School and dropped at home.
Following every lesson, your instructor sends a written assessment by email to both the student and parent. It covers what the student practiced, how it went, and the priorities for between-lesson work. When a parent is at drop-off, the instructor also takes a few minutes to talk through it in person.
Stick to what was covered in the most recent lesson. Your progress report will have specific guidance. The general rule: master that skill before moving to anything more advanced.
- Quiet residential streets, good for Level 1 review
- Empty parking lots, good for parking, turning circles, and low-stakes maneuvering
- Main streets throughout West Hills once residential driving is solid
If a particular skill feels uncomfortable for you and your student to practice, it's okay to wait until the next lesson. Don't push into anything that feels unsafe.
Male and female instructors are both available, and you can read bios before booking any lesson. You can also switch between our Toyota Prius and Lexus SUV, both equipped with dual brake controls for instructor safety.
Instructor and vehicle preferences are accommodated based on availability and are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis at time of booking.
Most DTHS students test at Winnetka DMV (our top recommendation for this school). See the DMV section above for full details.
Many students use both of our test prep options together: a refresher lesson in the days before the test to sharpen skills, followed by our full DMV Test Prep package on test day where we handle scheduling, bring a licensed and insured vehicle, check the student in, and provide a confidence boost right before the examiner arrives. They work well in sequence.
