Local streets and practice areas
Where instructors typically take GHC students, from quiet residential streets to freeway on-ramps.
Students in the Granada Hills HS area encounter a wide range of driving environments. Lessons start on lower-traffic streets and gradually progress as the student builds real confidence.
Main streets
- Residential streets east of White Oak Ave and north of Chatsworth St Quieter neighborhood streets may be useful for practicing speed control, scanning for parked vehicles, and making smooth turns at stop signs when traffic is calm. The area provides a variety of residential blocks that can help newer drivers build confidence before moving to busier roads.
- Zelzah Ave For a student driver, this road may introduce a variety of real-world driving situations, including school-zone traffic, marked crosswalks, and vehicles entering and leaving nearby businesses and parking lots. It can help build observation skills, pedestrian awareness, and confidence making decisions in a busier driving environment.
- Balboa Blvd This busy multi-lane road may help students practice lane positioning, traffic signals, and maintaining appropriate speeds in a faster-moving environment. As experience grows, it can also provide opportunities to work on lane changes and navigating larger intersections.
- Reseda Blvd Reseda Blvd gives students experience on a busy commercial street where they may encounter shoppers entering and exiting parking lots, vehicles pulling in and out of curbside parking spaces, and frequent pedestrian activity. This road can help build observation skills, speed management, and confidence making decisions in changing traffic conditions, especially near businesses and the California State University, Northridge area.
Key intersections
- San Jose St and Encino Ave This neighborhood intersection gives students a chance to slow things down and focus on the basics. The all-way stop setup can help build confidence with turn-taking, observation, and smooth decision-making before moving to busier roads.
- Zelzah Ave and Chatsworth St Zelzah Ave and Chatsworth St typically sees steady local traffic, especially during school commute and afternoon pickup hours. Students can practice stopping smoothly at traffic lights, judging safe gaps for turns, and monitoring crosswalk activity. The intersection works well for drivers who are comfortable with basic vehicle control and are ready to build confidence in more active traffic conditions.
- Reseda Blvd and Devonshire St Reseda Blvd and Devonshire St is a large intersection with protected left-turn lanes, several travel lanes in each direction, and regular pedestrian activity near nearby businesses and schools. Traffic can become congested during peak hours, and the incline on Reseda Blvd may add an extra challenge for some new drivers. This location can help students develop confidence with lane positioning, turning from designated lanes, reading traffic signals, and handling busier traffic environments.
Freeway on-ramps near GHC
- Balboa Blvd onto the 118 W This on-ramp provides a longer entry lane that allows drivers to accelerate to freeway speed before joining the flow of traffic. It can be a good fit when a student is ready to begin freeway practice, because they can focus on lane position, scanning traffic ahead, and getting comfortable with faster-moving traffic.
- Devonshire St onto the 405 S This on-ramp has a shorter acceleration area than some nearby freeway entrances, which may require students to build speed efficiently before merging. It is generally better suited for drivers who already have some freeway experience and are comfortable judging traffic gaps.
Why between-lesson practice matters
How to make the most of practice time, and what California actually requires before your student can test.
California requires two things before a teen can apply for a driver's license:
- Minimum 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school (this is what our lesson packages cover)
- Minimum 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a parent, guardian, or licensed instructor. At least 10 hours must be at night
The 50 hours can be tracked using our free California driving log. Individual or custom lessons with our instructors count toward this total.
Beyond the standard package, students can add individual or custom lessons whenever they want. They are useful for:
- Extra practice on specific skills (freeway driving, parking, canyon roads)
- Logging additional hours toward the 50-hour DMV requirement
- Night driving practice with a licensed instructor (counts toward the required 10 nighttime hours)
- Building confidence before the DMV road test
Ask us about individual lesson options when you sign up or after completing your package.
Stick with what was covered in the last lesson before moving on to anything new. Familiar Granada Hills streets are perfect for this kind of low-pressure repetition.
- Quiet residential streets with minimal traffic
- Empty public parking lots (school or shopping center off-hours)
- Avoid jumping to busier roads or freeway until the instructor confirms the student is ready
Students who practice between lessons advance significantly faster. Less time reviewing old material means more time building new skills.
Spreading lessons across the full 6 months of the learner's permit is what we usually recommend. It gives families time for supervised practice between sessions, and each lesson can build meaningfully on the previous one. We know GHC families juggle school, sports, and activities, so we plan around your schedule when needed.
This is completely understandable and far more common than people assume. Families should never feel pressure to practice beyond their comfort level. Just wait for the next lesson. The instructor will check readiness and take it from there.
Getting ready for your road test
Two ways to get ready for the road test. Most students use them in combination, but either one works on its own.
A focused lesson scheduled 1-2 weeks ahead of test day. Your instructor walks through DMV expectations, runs a mock road test, flags habits that could cost points on the actual exam, and helps build pre-test confidence.
If you have already booked your DMV slot, let us know which office. We will plan the refresher to cover the roads around that DMV as much as legally possible. The DMV itself prohibits driving the test route during business hours, but our instructors know the streets around the DMVs near Granada Hills and can prepare your student for what they are most likely to see.
The refresher lesson works well on its own, and pairs naturally with the day-of test prep package below.
This is our most hands-off option for families. When you book the DMV Test Prep package, we work with you to find a DMV appointment that fits both your schedule and our instructor and vehicle availability. No DMV scheduling stress for you. If you're using this package, please don't book your own DMV slot separately, as we may not be available for that date.
On test day, we pick your student up about an hour before the appointment. Granada Hills families often appreciate the warm-up portion: we run focused practice on streets near the testing DMV, then drive to the appointment in our licensed, insured, and test-ready vehicle. The instructor handles check-in, confirms paperwork, and offers last-minute tips and a confidence boost right before the examiner arrives.
No need to provide a car, arrange a ride, or sort out DMV logistics. We take care of everything.

Quick guide for active GHC families
Day-to-day questions about lessons, pick-up, and progress.
Home pick-up is the most popular option, and the most convenient for most families. The instructor arrives at your front door at the scheduled time, greets the student, and (when a parent is around) briefly goes over the lesson plan beforehand and shares progress notes at drop-off.
Granada Hills driving school lessons have a 15-minute arrival window to account for traffic. All lesson time is always taught in full from the moment the instructor arrives.
A convenient option on school days or after activities. Students can meet us at or near the parking lot of Big Mama’s and Papa’s Pizzeria on Zelzah (10666 Zelzah Ave., Granada Hills, CA 91344). Our vehicles have a large leaf logo on the side. The instructor will exit to greet your student when safe, or your student can approach and enter directly.
Pick-up and drop-off can sometimes be different locations. For example, picked up at Granada Hills Charter High School and dropped at home.
Following every lesson, your instructor sends a written assessment by email to both the student and parent. It covers what the student practiced, how it went, and the priorities for between-lesson work. When a parent is at drop-off, the instructor also takes a few minutes to talk through it in person.
Stick to what was covered in the most recent lesson. Your progress report will have specific guidance. The general rule: master that skill before moving to anything more advanced.
- Quiet residential streets, good for Level 1 review
- Empty parking lots, good for parking, turning circles, and low-stakes maneuvering
- Main streets throughout Granada Hills once residential driving is solid
If you and your parent or guardian are not comfortable practicing a particular skill between lessons, just wait for the next lesson. Don't push into situations that feel unsafe.
You can choose between male and female instructors, and bios are available to read before booking. Vehicle preference is also yours to set: families pick between our Toyota Prius and Lexus SUV, each equipped with dual brake controls for instructor safety.
Instructor and vehicle preferences are accommodated based on availability and are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis at time of booking.
Most GHC students test at Winnetka DMV (our top recommendation for this school). Other good options include Newhall DMV. See the DMV section above for full details.
Many students use both of our test prep options together: a refresher lesson in the days before the test to sharpen skills, followed by our full DMV Test Prep package on test day where we handle scheduling, bring a licensed and insured vehicle, check the student in, and provide a confidence boost right before the examiner arrives. They work well in sequence.
