Local streets and practice areas
Where instructors typically take AHS students, from quiet residential streets to freeway on-ramps.
Agoura Hills gives students access to a wide mix of driving environments, from quiet residential streets to busy commercial roads and nearby freeway entrances. Lessons can gradually progress based on comfort level and experience behind the wheel.
Main streets
- Driver Ave This area may be useful for newer students when traffic is light, with opportunities to practice smooth steering, speed control, scanning ahead, and handling stop signs. Parked vehicles and occasional pedestrians can help reinforce observation skills.
- Argos St Students may encounter school pickup and drop-off activity, changing traffic patterns, and drivers entering or leaving parking areas. This can help build awareness, patience, and smooth braking habits during busier periods.
- Thousand Oaks Blvd When a student is ready, this larger road can help with lane positioning, maintaining appropriate speeds, and navigating intersections with stoplights. Traffic levels may vary significantly depending on the time of day.
- Kanan Rd This busier route may be useful for more experienced students who are working on lane changes, traffic awareness, and driving at higher speeds. It can also provide exposure to freeway-adjacent driving situations when appropriate for the student's skill level.
Key intersections
- Kanan Rd and Agoura Rd Kanan Rd and Agoura Rd gives students exposure to a wide variety of everyday driving situations, including busy traffic signals, multiple turn options, and changing traffic flow throughout the day. It's a useful place to practice making smooth lane choices well before the intersection, handling protected turn signals, and watching for pedestrians crossing near shopping centers and side streets. While manageable during quieter periods, the intersection becomes noticeably busier during commute hours, making it best suited for students who already have a solid foundation of basic driving skills.
- Thousand Oaks Blvd and Argos St Students may practice turns, lane positioning, speed control, and navigating an intersection with a stoplight.
- Thousand Oaks Blvd and Kanan Rd Thousand Oaks Blvd and Kanan Rd is one of the busier intersections in Agoura Hills, with multiple lanes, dedicated turn pockets, and steady traffic throughout much of the day. Students can practice left and right turns, proper lane selection, and scanning for pedestrians crossing at marked crosswalks. Midday traffic is often manageable for training, while peak commute periods provide a more advanced challenge for experienced student drivers.
Freeway on-ramps near AHS
- Kanan Rd onto the 101 N For students who are ready to move beyond city streets, this ramp offers a comfortable introduction to freeway driving. The acceleration lane is typically long enough to build speed gradually, and because it enters an added lane that continues to the next exit, students often have more time to settle into freeway traffic before making lane changes. During busy periods, traffic volume can still make the entry more challenging.
- Kanan Rd onto the 101 S For students beginning freeway training, this ramp can be a useful step up in difficulty from some nearby freeway entrances. The acceleration lane typically provides enough room to build speed before entering the freeway, but drivers must merge into traffic rather than continuing in an added lane. During busier periods, heavier traffic can require more careful timing, observation, and gap selection, making this a better fit for intermediate students who are already comfortable with higher-speed driving.
Why between-lesson practice matters
Guidance on supervised practice, California's hour requirements, and how to stay on track between lessons.
Before a California teen can apply for a license, two requirements must be met:
- Minimum 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school (this is what our lesson packages cover)
- Minimum 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a parent, guardian, or licensed instructor. At least 10 hours must be at night
Practice hours can be tracked using our free California driving log. If your student adds individual or custom lessons with us, those count toward the 50-hour total too.
Some AHS students want more behind-the-wheel time than the standard package provides. Individual or custom lessons can be added at any point and are commonly used for:
- Extra practice on specific skills (freeway driving, parking, canyon roads)
- Logging additional hours toward the 50-hour DMV requirement
- Night driving practice with a licensed instructor (counts toward the required 10 nighttime hours)
- Building confidence before the DMV road test
Just ask about individual lesson options at sign-up, or anytime after your package is finished.
Practice what was covered in the most recent lesson before advancing to anything new.
- Quiet residential streets with minimal traffic
- Empty public parking lots (school or shopping center off-hours)
- Avoid jumping to busier roads or freeway until the instructor confirms the student is ready
Students who practice in their own Agoura Hills neighborhoods between lessons typically progress faster. Less time spent reviewing old skills means more time gained on new ones.
Our usual recommendation is to spread lessons across the full 6 months of the learner's permit. That gives families time for real supervised practice in between, and lets each lesson build meaningfully on the last. Every family's schedule is different though, so we work around school, sports, and other activities.
It is more common than you might think, and completely understandable. Parents and students should not feel pressure to practice beyond their comfort zone. Wait for the next lesson, and your instructor will assess readiness and pick up from there.
Getting ready for your road test
Two ways to get ready for the road test. Most students use them in combination, but either one works on its own.
A focused lesson scheduled 1-2 weeks ahead of test day. Your instructor walks through DMV expectations, runs a mock road test, flags habits that could cost points on the actual exam, and helps build pre-test confidence.
If you have already booked your DMV appointment, share the location with us. We will work to practice nearby beforehand, within legal limits. Keep in mind that DMVs prohibit driving the actual test route during business hours, but our instructors know the roads around local DMV offices well and can prepare your student for similar driving conditions.
Plenty of families use just this. Others combine it with the full test prep package below for end-to-end coverage.
This is the most hands-off path for families. With the DMV Test Prep package booked, we coordinate a DMV appointment that fits both your schedule and our instructor and vehicle availability. You skip the scheduling headache. One important note: if you go with this package, please do not book your own DMV slot separately, since we may not have coverage for that date.
On the day of the test, we pick the student up roughly an hour ahead of the appointment, warm up with focused practice on roads near the DMV, then drive to the test in our licensed, insured, and test-ready vehicle. The instructor handles check-in, makes sure all paperwork is correct, and gives last-minute tips and encouragement right before the examiner arrives.
Families don't need to bring their own car, figure out the drive to the DMV, or untangle paperwork. All of that is handled for you.
Which DMV should Agoura Hills students use?
Our recommendations are based on recent student pass trends, route predictability, and local traffic conditions.
Choosing the right DMV can make a meaningful difference. Most of our guidance is based on ongoing data from student road tests, not just general reputation.

Home pick-up is the most popular option, and the most convenient for most families. The instructor arrives at your front door at the scheduled time, greets the student, and (when a parent is around) briefly goes over the lesson plan beforehand and shares progress notes at drop-off.
Agoura Hills driving school lessons have a 15-minute arrival window to account for traffic. All lesson time is always taught in full from the moment the instructor arrives.
A convenient option on school days or after activities. Students can meet us at or near the corner of Thousand Oaks Blvd and Argos St by the football field. Our vehicles have a large leaf logo on the side. The instructor will exit to greet your student when safe, or your student can approach and enter directly.
Pick-up and drop-off can sometimes be different locations. For example, picked up at Agoura High School and dropped at home.
Following every lesson, your instructor sends a written assessment by email to both the student and parent. It covers what the student practiced, how it went, and the priorities for between-lesson work. When a parent is at drop-off, the instructor also takes a few minutes to talk through it in person.
Stick to what was covered in the most recent lesson. Your progress report will have specific guidance. The general rule: master that skill before moving to anything more advanced.
- Quiet residential streets, good for Level 1 review
- Empty parking lots, good for parking, turning circles, and low-stakes maneuvering
- Main streets throughout Agoura Hills once residential driving is solid
If a particular skill feels uncomfortable for you and your student to practice, it's okay to wait until the next lesson. Don't push into anything that feels unsafe.
Male and female instructors are both available, and you can read bios before booking any lesson. You can also switch between our Toyota Prius and Lexus SUV, both equipped with dual brake controls for instructor safety.
We accommodate instructor and vehicle requests based on availability. Assignments happen on a first-come, first-served basis when you book.
Most AHS students test at Thousand Oaks DMV (our top recommendation for this school). Other good options include Winnetka DMV. See the DMV section above for full details.
Plenty of students combine both of our test prep options for the strongest setup: a refresher lesson a few days before the road test to sharpen any rough edges, plus our full DMV Test Prep package on the day of the test, where we handle the appointment, bring our licensed and insured vehicle, check the student in, and offer a confidence boost just before the examiner arrives. The two work well in sequence.
