Local streets and practice areas
Where instructors typically take WHS students, from quiet residential streets to freeway on-ramps.
Westlake Village gives students access to a wide mix of driving environments, from quiet residential streets to busy commercial roads and nearby freeway entrances. Lessons can gradually progress based on comfort level and experience behind the wheel.
Main streets
- Residential streets near Lake Lindero Dr Residential streets near Lake Lindero Dr offer a nearby area where students can practice basic driving skills before moving on to busier roads. The neighborhood provides opportunities to work on steering control, speed management, and handling stop sign intersections.
- Lakeview Canyon Rd Lakeview Canyon Rd is a useful step between residential driving and busier main roads. Students can practice maintaining lane position, adjusting to traffic in multiple lanes, and scanning for cyclists traveling alongside traffic. The combination of a wider roadway and bike lanes helps build awareness and confidence in a more active driving environment.
- Thousand Oaks Blvd This busier nearby road may be useful once a student is ready for more traffic, traffic signals, and more decision-making. It can help with scanning ahead, managing speed, and preparing for turns while staying aware of faster-moving cars.
Key intersections
- Lake Lindero Dr and Reyes Adobe Rd Lake Lindero Dr and Reyes Adobe Rd is a multi-lane all-way stop that can help students practice determining whose turn it is to proceed while managing traffic from several directions. It is generally best suited for students who are already comfortable with basic neighborhood driving and stop sign procedures.
- Thousand Oaks Blvd and Lakeview Canyon Rd Thousand Oaks Blvd and Lakeview Canyon Rd is a multi-lane intersection with a stoplight and moderate traffic levels, with added activity during school and commute times. It can help intermediate students practice lane position, traffic light awareness, and making turns while monitoring surrounding traffic and pedestrians.
- Thousand Oaks Blvd and Lindero Canyon Rd This intersection introduces students to a more active driving environment where there is often a lot happening at once. Traffic lights, multiple lanes, bike lanes, and nearby driveways encourage students to stay alert and make thoughtful driving decisions.
Freeway on-ramps near WHS
- Lindero Canyon Rd onto the 101 N This on-ramp is often a good introduction to freeway driving because the entrance lane continues as an added lane after entering the freeway, reducing the need for an immediate merge. Students can focus on building speed, scanning traffic, and becoming comfortable with freeway speeds before making a lane change when appropriate.
- Lindero Canyon Rd onto the 101 S This on-ramp requires students to merge into freeway traffic rather than continuing into an added lane, making it a useful next step after easier freeway entrances. Students can practice accelerating to freeway speed, identifying safe gaps, and making timely merge decisions in moderate to heavier traffic.
Between lessons: progress and practice
Guidance on supervised practice, California's hour requirements, and how to stay on track between lessons.
Before a California teen can apply for a license, two requirements must be met:
- Minimum 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school (this is what our lesson packages cover)
- Minimum 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a parent, guardian, or licensed instructor. At least 10 hours must be at night
Those 50 hours can be tracked using our free California driving log. Time spent in individual or custom lessons with our instructors counts toward the total.
Some WHS students want more behind-the-wheel time than the standard package provides. Individual or custom lessons can be added at any point and are commonly used for:
- Extra practice on specific skills (freeway driving, parking, canyon roads)
- Logging additional hours toward the 50-hour DMV requirement
- Night driving practice with a licensed instructor (counts toward the required 10 nighttime hours)
- Building confidence before the DMV road test
If individual lessons sound useful, mention it when you sign up, or get in touch once your package is completed.
Practice the skills from the most recent lesson before progressing further. The quieter neighborhoods around Westlake Village work well for this.
- Quiet residential streets with minimal traffic
- Empty public parking lots (school or shopping center off-hours)
- Avoid jumping to busier roads or freeway until the instructor confirms the student is ready
Students who practice in their own Westlake Village neighborhoods between lessons typically progress faster. Less time spent reviewing old skills means more time gained on new ones.
Spreading lessons across the full 6 months of the learner's permit is what we usually recommend. It gives families time for supervised practice between sessions, and each lesson can build meaningfully on the previous one. We know WHS families juggle school, sports, and activities, so we plan around your schedule when needed.
Completely understandable, and more common than you might think. Families should never feel pressure to practice beyond their comfort level. Simply wait until the next lesson. The instructor will assess readiness and take it from there.
Test day, handled: refresher lessons and full prep
Most WHS students use one or both of these before test day. They work well together.
A targeted lesson 1-2 weeks before your scheduled test. Your instructor runs through DMV expectations, conducts a mock road test, identifies habits that could cost points, and builds confidence before test day.
If you have already booked your DMV slot, let us know which office. We will plan the refresher to cover the roads around that DMV as much as legally possible. The DMV itself prohibits driving the test route during business hours, but our instructors know the streets around the DMVs near Westlake Village and can prepare your student for what they are most likely to see.
Plenty of families use just this. Others combine it with the full test prep package below for end-to-end coverage.
This is our most hands-off option for families. When you book the DMV Test Prep package, we work with you to find a DMV appointment that fits both your schedule and our instructor and vehicle availability. No DMV scheduling stress for you. If you're using this package, please don't book your own DMV slot separately, as we may not be available for that date.
On test day, we pick your student up about an hour before the appointment, warm up with focused practice near the DMV, then drive to the test in our licensed, insured, and test-ready vehicle. Our instructor checks the student in, makes sure all paperwork is in order, and provides last-minute tips and a confidence boost right before the examiner arrives.
You don't need to provide a car, arrange transportation, or navigate DMV logistics. We handle it all.

Choosing the right DMV can make a meaningful difference. Most of our guidance is based on ongoing data from student road tests, not just general reputation.

Logistics, progress reports, and what to focus on between lessons.
Home pick-up is the most popular option, and the most convenient for most families. The instructor arrives at your front door at the scheduled time, greets the student, and (when a parent is around) briefly goes over the lesson plan beforehand and shares progress notes at drop-off.
Westlake Village driving school lessons have a 15-minute arrival window to account for traffic. All lesson time is always taught in full from the moment the instructor arrives.
A convenient option on school days or after activities. Students can meet us at or near the tennis courts on Lakeview Canyon Rd. Our vehicles have a large leaf logo on the side. The instructor will exit to greet your student when safe, or your student can approach and enter directly.
Pick-up and drop-off can sometimes be different locations. For example, picked up at Westlake High School and dropped at home.
Each lesson is followed by a personal written assessment, emailed to both the student and parent. The report breaks down what was covered, how the student performed, and what to focus on before next time. If a parent is around at drop-off, your instructor will also walk through it in person for a few minutes.
Practice what was covered in the most recent lesson, ideally on familiar Westlake Village streets where stress is lower. The progress report will give you specific guidance, but the rule of thumb is to master that skill before moving on to anything more advanced.
- Quiet residential streets, good for Level 1 review
- Empty parking lots, good for parking, turning circles, and low-stakes maneuvering
- Main streets throughout Westlake Village once residential driving is solid
When a student and parent or guardian don't feel ready to practice a skill without an instructor, the best choice is to wait for the next lesson. Don't take on situations that feel unsafe.
Male and female instructors are both available, and you can read bios before booking any lesson. You can also switch between our Toyota Prius and Lexus SUV, both equipped with dual brake controls for instructor safety.
We accommodate instructor and vehicle requests based on availability. Assignments happen on a first-come, first-served basis when you book.
Most WHS students test at Thousand Oaks DMV (our top recommendation for this school). See the DMV section above for full details.
It is common for students to use both test prep options as a sequence: first a refresher lesson in the days before the road test to polish skills, then our full DMV Test Prep package on test day, when we coordinate the appointment, bring a licensed and insured vehicle, check the student in, and give a final confidence boost before the examiner arrives. Together they cover preparation and execution.
