📋
Getting started: Need a permit first
Haven't taken drivers ed or passed the written test yet

Getting your permit: what you need

A few key steps stand between your teen and a learner's permit. Here's what each one looks like.

1
Complete a DMV-approved drivers ed course
California requires drivers ed before any teen can take the DMV written test. Our online course is a 30-hour equivalent that students complete on their own schedule, often over the course of a couple of weeks alongside school and activities. Once finished, you'll get the completion certificate the DMV needs to see.
2
Sit for the DMV written exam
Once drivers ed is done, head to any DMV office with a parent or guardian to take the written test. The closest DMV to Westlake Village is usually the easy choice for the written test. Since the test itself is identical at every location, picking the most convenient one makes sense. We also offer a one-on-one permit test tutoring session over Zoom for students who want extra prep.
3
Reserve your driving lessons early
Booking lessons before the permit is issued is allowed and is what we generally suggest. Slots fill in advance, and reserving early means your teen isn't waiting around after passing the written test. The only requirement is that permit information be on file before the lesson actually takes place. For families who want a head start, we also offer a Student License option that lets some students begin training before the permit arrives. We can walk you through it at sign-up.
💡 Most families get both the permit course and driving lessons together. We offer combo packages that cover everything needed to get licensed in California. WHS students get $10 off with code WHSsave10.

Common permit questions

Can my student start driving lessons before getting a permit?
Usually, yes. Reserving lesson dates before the permit arrives is something we recommend, because openings around Westlake Village tend to go quickly. We just need the permit details on file before the lesson itself. For students who want to start behind-the-wheel training before the permit is in hand, ask us about our Student License option when you sign up.
How long does the online drivers ed course take?
It's a 30-hour equivalent that runs entirely at the student's pace. A few teens finish in a handful of sittings, while others stretch it over a couple of weeks around school and activities. You log in and out from any device, and nothing counts against you while you're away.
What if my student doesn't pass the written test the first time?
Retakes are allowed, so a first-time miss isn't a setback. For students who want targeted help before going back in, we offer a live Zoom permit tutoring session with an instructor focused on the written test.
Which DMV should we use for the permit test?
For the written test, location doesn't matter. It's the same computerized test at every office. Pick whichever is most convenient. DMV location matters more for the road test later; we have guidance on that in the "Almost ready for the DMV test" section above.

Have a permit: lessons, pick-up, and practice areas
Ready to start behind-the-wheel training

Six lesson levels, one road to the DMV test

Skill builds level by level. Students typically complete the 6 or 10-hour program over several weeks, with practice between sessions reinforcing what was learned.

Vehicle basics, steering, braking, right-of-way, and low-traffic Westlake Village neighborhood streets to build comfort and control.

Core

Level 2: City streets and traffic

Turns, lane changes, speed control, intersections, and main Westlake Village roads with real traffic flow.

Core

Level 3: Review and freeway intro

Cumulative skill review, first freeway introduction when ready, and a mock DMV assessment to gauge progress.

Advanced

Level 4: Freeway driving

Freeway entry, merging, lane discipline, safe following distance, and I.P.D.E. defensive driving technique.

Advanced

Level 5: Canyons and defensive driving

Real-world driving on roads near Westlake Village, with a focus on speed control, hazard awareness, and situational judgment.

Test Prep

DMV refresher + day-of test prep

Mock test, common mistake review, confidence building, and use of our vehicle for the road test.

💡 Freeway driving is not introduced before the third lesson, and only happens once the instructor has confirmed the student is genuinely ready. Parents are welcome to request specific skills, but instructors always prioritize what is appropriate for where the student is right now.

Where lessons start

We pick up from home or directly from Westlake High School, whichever fits your family's schedule.

🏠 Home pick-up & drop-off

Most common. Our instructors come to you.
For most families, this is the easiest option. We serve Westlake Village, Thousand Oaks, Oak Park, Agoura Hills, and more. Your instructor comes to your front door, greets the student and, when available, a parent before and after the lesson to discuss the plan and share progress.

Pick-up and drop-off are usually the same location, but we can sometimes accommodate a nearby alternate drop-off.

Local streets and practice areas

Where instructors typically take WHS students, from quiet residential streets to freeway on-ramps.

Westlake Village gives students access to a wide mix of driving environments, from quiet residential streets to busy commercial roads and nearby freeway entrances. Lessons can gradually progress based on comfort level and experience behind the wheel.

Main streets

  • Residential streets near Lake Lindero Dr Residential streets near Lake Lindero Dr offer a nearby area where students can practice basic driving skills before moving on to busier roads. The neighborhood provides opportunities to work on steering control, speed management, and handling stop sign intersections.
  • Lakeview Canyon Rd Lakeview Canyon Rd is a useful step between residential driving and busier main roads. Students can practice maintaining lane position, adjusting to traffic in multiple lanes, and scanning for cyclists traveling alongside traffic. The combination of a wider roadway and bike lanes helps build awareness and confidence in a more active driving environment.
  • Thousand Oaks Blvd This busier nearby road may be useful once a student is ready for more traffic, traffic signals, and more decision-making. It can help with scanning ahead, managing speed, and preparing for turns while staying aware of faster-moving cars.

Key intersections

  • Lake Lindero Dr and Reyes Adobe Rd Lake Lindero Dr and Reyes Adobe Rd is a multi-lane all-way stop that can help students practice determining whose turn it is to proceed while managing traffic from several directions. It is generally best suited for students who are already comfortable with basic neighborhood driving and stop sign procedures.
  • Thousand Oaks Blvd and Lakeview Canyon Rd Thousand Oaks Blvd and Lakeview Canyon Rd is a multi-lane intersection with a stoplight and moderate traffic levels, with added activity during school and commute times. It can help intermediate students practice lane position, traffic light awareness, and making turns while monitoring surrounding traffic and pedestrians.
  • Thousand Oaks Blvd and Lindero Canyon Rd This intersection introduces students to a more active driving environment where there is often a lot happening at once. Traffic lights, multiple lanes, bike lanes, and nearby driveways encourage students to stay alert and make thoughtful driving decisions.

Freeway on-ramps near WHS

  • Lindero Canyon Rd onto the 101 N This on-ramp is often a good introduction to freeway driving because the entrance lane continues as an added lane after entering the freeway, reducing the need for an immediate merge. Students can focus on building speed, scanning traffic, and becoming comfortable with freeway speeds before making a lane change when appropriate.
  • Lindero Canyon Rd onto the 101 S This on-ramp requires students to merge into freeway traffic rather than continuing into an added lane, making it a useful next step after easier freeway entrances. Students can practice accelerating to freeway speed, identifying safe gaps, and making timely merge decisions in moderate to heavier traffic.
⚠️ Road conditions shift with construction, traffic, and changes over time. These are general starting points. Instructors always adapt based on current conditions and student readiness.

Between lessons: progress and practice

Guidance on supervised practice, California's hour requirements, and how to stay on track between lessons.

📝 After every lesson, your driving instructor sends a personal written assessment to both student and parent, covering what was practiced, how it went, and exactly what to work on before the next session.

Before a California teen can apply for a license, two requirements must be met:

  • Minimum 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school (this is what our lesson packages cover)
  • Minimum 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a parent, guardian, or licensed instructor. At least 10 hours must be at night

Those 50 hours can be tracked using our free California driving log. Time spent in individual or custom lessons with our instructors counts toward the total.

Some WHS students want more behind-the-wheel time than the standard package provides. Individual or custom lessons can be added at any point and are commonly used for:

  • Extra practice on specific skills (freeway driving, parking, canyon roads)
  • Logging additional hours toward the 50-hour DMV requirement
  • Night driving practice with a licensed instructor (counts toward the required 10 nighttime hours)
  • Building confidence before the DMV road test

If individual lessons sound useful, mention it when you sign up, or get in touch once your package is completed.

Practice the skills from the most recent lesson before progressing further. The quieter neighborhoods around Westlake Village work well for this.

  • Quiet residential streets with minimal traffic
  • Empty public parking lots (school or shopping center off-hours)
  • Avoid jumping to busier roads or freeway until the instructor confirms the student is ready

Students who practice in their own Westlake Village neighborhoods between lessons typically progress faster. Less time spent reviewing old skills means more time gained on new ones.

Spreading lessons across the full 6 months of the learner's permit is what we usually recommend. It gives families time for supervised practice between sessions, and each lesson can build meaningfully on the previous one. We know WHS families juggle school, sports, and activities, so we plan around your schedule when needed.

Completely understandable, and more common than you might think. Families should never feel pressure to practice beyond their comfort level. Simply wait until the next lesson. The instructor will assess readiness and take it from there.

Almost ready for the DMV test: prep and DMV guidance
Lessons done. Need test prep or a car for the road test.

Test day, handled: refresher lessons and full prep

Most WHS students use one or both of these before test day. They work well together.

💡 Refresher lessons and day-of test prep are not mutually exclusive. Plenty of families schedule a refresher in the days before the test, then add the full test prep package for test day. The two work in sequence: one builds skill, the other handles execution.

A targeted lesson 1-2 weeks before your scheduled test. Your instructor runs through DMV expectations, conducts a mock road test, identifies habits that could cost points, and builds confidence before test day.

If you have already booked your DMV slot, let us know which office. We will plan the refresher to cover the roads around that DMV as much as legally possible. The DMV itself prohibits driving the test route during business hours, but our instructors know the streets around the DMVs near Westlake Village and can prepare your student for what they are most likely to see.

Plenty of families use just this. Others combine it with the full test prep package below for end-to-end coverage.

This is our most hands-off option for families. When you book the DMV Test Prep package, we work with you to find a DMV appointment that fits both your schedule and our instructor and vehicle availability. No DMV scheduling stress for you. If you're using this package, please don't book your own DMV slot separately, as we may not be available for that date.

On test day, we pick your student up about an hour before the appointment, warm up with focused practice near the DMV, then drive to the test in our licensed, insured, and test-ready vehicle. Our instructor checks the student in, makes sure all paperwork is in order, and provides last-minute tips and a confidence boost right before the examiner arrives.

You don't need to provide a car, arrange transportation, or navigate DMV logistics. We handle it all.

Choosing the right DMV can make a meaningful difference. Most of our guidance is based on ongoing data from student road tests, not just general reputation.

For current students and families

Logistics, progress reports, and what to focus on between lessons.

Home pick-up is the most popular option, and the most convenient for most families. The instructor arrives at your front door at the scheduled time, greets the student, and (when a parent is around) briefly goes over the lesson plan beforehand and shares progress notes at drop-off.

Westlake Village driving school lessons have a 15-minute arrival window to account for traffic. All lesson time is always taught in full from the moment the instructor arrives.

A convenient option on school days or after activities. Students can meet us at or near the tennis courts on Lakeview Canyon Rd. Our vehicles have a large leaf logo on the side. The instructor will exit to greet your student when safe, or your student can approach and enter directly.

Pick-up and drop-off can sometimes be different locations. For example, picked up at Westlake High School and dropped at home.

Pick-up spot: Westlake Village

Each lesson is followed by a personal written assessment, emailed to both the student and parent. The report breaks down what was covered, how the student performed, and what to focus on before next time. If a parent is around at drop-off, your instructor will also walk through it in person for a few minutes.

Practice what was covered in the most recent lesson, ideally on familiar Westlake Village streets where stress is lower. The progress report will give you specific guidance, but the rule of thumb is to master that skill before moving on to anything more advanced.

  • Quiet residential streets, good for Level 1 review
  • Empty parking lots, good for parking, turning circles, and low-stakes maneuvering
  • Main streets throughout Westlake Village once residential driving is solid

When a student and parent or guardian don't feel ready to practice a skill without an instructor, the best choice is to wait for the next lesson. Don't take on situations that feel unsafe.

Male and female instructors are both available, and you can read bios before booking any lesson. You can also switch between our Toyota Prius and Lexus SUV, both equipped with dual brake controls for instructor safety.

We accommodate instructor and vehicle requests based on availability. Assignments happen on a first-come, first-served basis when you book.

Most WHS students test at Thousand Oaks DMV (our top recommendation for this school). See the DMV section above for full details.

It is common for students to use both test prep options as a sequence: first a refresher lesson in the days before the road test to polish skills, then our full DMV Test Prep package on test day, when we coordinate the appointment, bring a licensed and insured vehicle, check the student in, and give a final confidence boost before the examiner arrives. Together they cover preparation and execution.
