Local streets and practice areas
Where instructors typically take WRHS students, from quiet residential streets to freeway on-ramps.
WRHS students practice on a mix of residential streets, multi-lane roads, and freeway on-ramps near Stevenson Ranch. Each lesson is paced to the student - starting slower and building toward independent driving.
Main streets
- Boulder Crest Dr Boulder Crest Dr is a quiet neighborhood street near WRHS where students can work on steering control, speed control, smooth braking, and checking carefully at side streets where cross traffic may have stop signs. The nearby cul-de-sac and curb space can also give students a calmer place to practice curbside parking, 2-point turns, and 3-point turns when appropriate.
- Old Rock Rd This smaller school-area street can help students practice turning from a main road into a quieter area, watching for cars, and staying patient near campus traffic.
- Westridge Pkwy This multi-lane road has longer stretches with moderate curves, faster traffic, and several intersections with traffic lights. It can help students practice lane position, smooth speed control, lane changes, and staying aware of traffic around them when they are ready for a more active road.
- Valencia Blvd Valencia Blvd runs directly by West Ranch High School and can help a student practice traffic lights, lane changes, speed management, and awareness of surrounding traffic on a busier roadway.
Key intersections
- Valencia Blvd and Old Rock Rd Valencia Blvd and Old Rock Rd is a T-intersection where students coming from Old Rock Rd need to wait for a clear opening before turning onto a busier, divided road with multiple lanes. It is best for students who already handle basic turns well, because they need to judge cross traffic, choose the correct lane, and check for pedestrians before moving.
- Valencia Blvd and The Old Rd Valencia Blvd and The Old Rd is a wide intersection with a stoplight, multiple lanes, and several turn lanes, so it is best for students who already feel comfortable with basic city driving. It can help students practice reading lights and turn arrows, choosing the correct lane early, watching heavier traffic, and checking crosswalks before turning.
Freeway on-ramps near WRHS
- Valencia Blvd onto the 5 N A short 5 North on-ramp best for advanced students practicing quicker acceleration, traffic checks, and confident merging.
Between lessons: progress and practice
What to do between sessions, and how California's requirements shape the process.
California requires two things before a teen can apply for a driver's license:
- Minimum 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school (this is what our lesson packages cover)
- Minimum 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a parent, guardian, or licensed instructor. At least 10 hours must be at night
Those 50 hours can be tracked using our free California driving log. Time spent in individual or custom lessons with our instructors counts toward the total.
Beyond the standard package, students can add individual or custom lessons whenever they want. They are useful for:
- Extra practice on specific skills (freeway driving, parking, canyon roads)
- Logging additional hours toward the 50-hour DMV requirement
- Night driving practice with a licensed instructor (counts toward the required 10 nighttime hours)
- Building confidence before the DMV road test
Just ask about individual lesson options at sign-up, or anytime after your package is finished.
Practice what was covered in the most recent lesson before advancing to anything new.
- Quiet residential streets with minimal traffic
- Empty public parking lots (school or shopping center off-hours)
- Avoid jumping to busier roads or freeway until the instructor confirms the student is ready
Students who practice between lessons advance significantly faster. Less time reviewing old material means more time building new skills.
Spreading lessons across the full 6 months of the learner's permit is what we usually recommend. It gives families time for supervised practice between sessions, and each lesson can build meaningfully on the previous one. We know WRHS families juggle school, sports, and activities, so we plan around your schedule when needed.
Completely understandable, and more common than you might think. Families should never feel pressure to practice beyond their comfort level. Simply wait until the next lesson. The instructor will assess readiness and take it from there.
Test day, handled: refresher lessons and full prep
Two ways to get ready for the road test. Most students use them in combination, but either one works on its own.
A targeted lesson 1-2 weeks before your scheduled test. Your instructor runs through DMV expectations, conducts a mock road test, identifies habits that could cost points, and builds confidence before test day.
If you have already booked your DMV slot, let us know which office. We will plan the refresher to cover the roads around that DMV as much as legally possible. The DMV itself prohibits driving the test route during business hours, but our instructors know the streets around the DMVs near Stevenson Ranch and can prepare your student for what they are most likely to see.
Plenty of families use just this. Others combine it with the full test prep package below for end-to-end coverage.
This is the most hands-off path for families. With the DMV Test Prep package booked, we coordinate a DMV appointment that fits both your schedule and our instructor and vehicle availability. You skip the scheduling headache. One important note: if you go with this package, please do not book your own DMV slot separately, since we may not have coverage for that date.
On test day, we pick your student up about an hour before the appointment. Stevenson Ranch families often appreciate the warm-up portion: we run focused practice on streets near the testing DMV, then drive to the appointment in our licensed, insured, and test-ready vehicle. The instructor handles check-in, confirms paperwork, and offers last-minute tips and a confidence boost right before the examiner arrives.
You don't need to provide a car, arrange transportation, or navigate DMV logistics. We handle it all.

Logistics, progress reports, and what to focus on between lessons.
Home pick-up is the most popular option, and the most convenient for most families. The instructor arrives at your front door at the scheduled time, greets the student, and (when a parent is around) briefly goes over the lesson plan beforehand and shares progress notes at drop-off.
Each lesson has a 15-minute arrival window to allow for traffic. Once your instructor arrives, the full scheduled lesson time is taught in its entirety. No portion gets cut for a late start.
A convenient option on school days or after activities. Students can meet us at or near the parking lot on Valencia Blvd next to the football field. Our vehicles have a large leaf logo on the side. The instructor will exit to greet your student when safe, or your student can approach and enter directly.
Pick-up and drop-off can sometimes be different locations. For example, picked up at West Ranch High School and dropped at home.
After every lesson, your instructor emails a personal written assessment to both student and parent: what was practiced, how it went, and what to work on before the next session. If a parent is available at drop-off, the instructor will take a few minutes to review in person.
Practice what your most recent lesson covered. The progress report will spell out specifics, but the general principle is simple: get comfortable with what you just learned before stepping up to anything more advanced.
- Quiet residential streets, good for Level 1 review
- Empty parking lots, good for parking, turning circles, and low-stakes maneuvering
- Main streets throughout Stevenson Ranch once residential driving is solid
When a student and parent or guardian don't feel ready to practice a skill without an instructor, the best choice is to wait for the next lesson. Don't take on situations that feel unsafe.
We have both male and female instructors on staff, and you can read bios before booking any lesson. Vehicle choice is also flexible: pick between our Toyota Prius and Lexus SUV, both fitted with dual brake controls for instructor safety.
Both instructor and vehicle preferences are honored where possible, subject to availability. Assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis at the time of booking.
Most WRHS students test at Newhall DMV (our top recommendation for this school). See the DMV section above for full details.
Plenty of students combine both of our test prep options for the strongest setup: a refresher lesson a few days before the road test to sharpen any rough edges, plus our full DMV Test Prep package on the day of the test, where we handle the appointment, bring our licensed and insured vehicle, check the student in, and offer a confidence boost just before the examiner arrives. The two work well in sequence.
