Getting started: Need a permit first
Haven't taken drivers ed or passed the written test yet

How VNHS students get their California permit

Before a California teen can drive with one of our instructors, a few key steps need to happen first.

1
Take and pass an online drivers ed course
Before a teen can sit for the written test, California requires a state-approved drivers ed course. Ours is online and self-paced, built to the 30-hour standard. Students log in and out as they go, which is helpful when school and after-school activities are in full swing. The completion certificate is what the DMV needs.
2
Pass the written permit test at the DMV
After the course is complete, take the test at any California DMV with a parent or guardian present. The test is identical statewide, so most Van Nuys families just pick the closest office. (For the road test later it matters more. See our DMV recommendations further down on this page.) If your teen wants targeted help, we run a live Zoom tutoring session focused entirely on the written test.
3
Don't wait on the permit. Book lessons now.
Booking lessons before the permit is issued is allowed and is what we generally suggest. Slots fill in advance, and reserving early means your teen isn't waiting around after passing the written test. The only requirement is that permit information be on file before the lesson actually takes place. For families who want a head start, we also offer a Student License option that lets some students begin training before the permit arrives. We can walk you through it at sign-up.
💡 Most families get both the permit course and driving lessons together. We offer combo packages that cover everything needed to get licensed in California. VNHS students get $10 off with code VNHSsave10.

Common permit questions

Can my student start driving lessons before getting a permit?
In most cases you can. Permit information only needs to be on file before the actual lesson, so reserving dates early is smart and keeps your student from waiting once the permit comes through. There is also a Student License path for those who qualify and want to get started sooner. Just ask when you enroll.
How long does the online drivers ed course take?
Plan on a 30-hour equivalent, though the schedule is up to your student. The course is self-paced and saves your progress, so it's easy to do a little at a time from a phone, tablet, or computer. There's no clock ticking between sessions.
What if my student doesn't pass the written test the first time?
The DMV allows retakes. We offer a live permit test tutoring session via Zoom with one of our instructors for students who want extra help before trying again.
Which DMV should we use for the permit test?
For the written test, location doesn't matter. It's the same computerized test at every office. Pick whichever is most convenient. DMV location matters more for the road test later; we have guidance on that in the "Almost ready for the DMV test" section above.

From residential streets to freeway: the lesson path

Lessons are taught in stages. Most driving school students in Van Nuys do 6 or 10 hours total, advancing through levels based on readiness and real-world practice between sessions.

Core

Level 1: Residential foundations

Vehicle basics, steering, braking, right-of-way, and low-traffic Van Nuys neighborhood streets to build comfort and control.

Core

Level 2: City streets and traffic

Turns, lane changes, speed control, intersections, and main Van Nuys roads with real traffic flow.

Core

Level 3: Review and freeway intro

Cumulative skill review, first freeway introduction when ready, and a mock DMV assessment to gauge progress.

Advanced

Level 4: Freeway driving

Freeway entry, merging, lane discipline, safe following distance, and I.P.D.E. defensive driving technique.

Advanced

Level 5: Canyons and defensive driving

Real-world driving on roads near Van Nuys, with a focus on speed control, hazard awareness, and situational judgment.

Test Prep

DMV refresher + day-of test prep

Mock test, common mistake review, confidence building, and use of our vehicle for the road test.

💡 Freeway driving is never introduced before the third lesson. It only happens when the instructor confirms the student is genuinely ready. Parents can request specific skills, but instructors always prioritize what is appropriate for the student's current level.

Where lessons start

We pick up from home or directly from Van Nuys High School, whichever fits your family's schedule.

🏠 Home pick-up & drop-off

Most common. Our instructors come to you.
For most families, this is the easiest option. We serve Van Nuys, and more. Your instructor comes to your front door, greets the student and, when available, a parent before and after the lesson to discuss the plan and share progress.

Pick-up and drop-off are usually the same location, but we can sometimes accommodate a nearby alternate drop-off.

Practice hours, the 50-hour rule, and what to do at home

Guidance on supervised practice, California's hour requirements, and how to stay on track between lessons.

📝 Every lesson ends with a personal written assessment from your instructor, sent to both student and parent. It covers what was worked on, how it went, and the specific skills to focus on before the next session.

California requires two things before a teen can apply for a driver's license:

  • Minimum 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school (this is what our lesson packages cover)
  • Minimum 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a parent, guardian, or licensed instructor. At least 10 hours must be at night

Practice hours can be tracked using our free California driving log. If your student adds individual or custom lessons with us, those count toward the 50-hour total too.

Some VNHS students want more behind-the-wheel time than the standard package provides. Individual or custom lessons can be added at any point and are commonly used for:

  • Extra practice on specific skills (freeway driving, parking, canyon roads)
  • Logging additional hours toward the 50-hour DMV requirement
  • Night driving practice with a licensed instructor (counts toward the required 10 nighttime hours)
  • Building confidence before the DMV road test

Ask us about individual lesson options when you sign up or after completing your package.

Stick with what was covered in the last lesson before moving on to anything new. Familiar Van Nuys streets are perfect for this kind of low-pressure repetition.

  • Quiet residential streets with minimal traffic
  • Empty public parking lots (school or shopping center off-hours)
  • Avoid jumping to busier roads or freeway until the instructor confirms the student is ready

Students who practice between lessons advance significantly faster. Less time reviewing old material means more time building new skills.

Our usual recommendation is to spread lessons across the full 6 months of the learner's permit. That gives families time for real supervised practice in between, and lets each lesson build meaningfully on the last. Every family's schedule is different though, so we work around school, sports, and other activities.

This is completely understandable and far more common than people assume. Families should never feel pressure to practice beyond their comfort level. Just wait for the next lesson. The instructor will check readiness and take it from there.

Almost ready for the DMV test: prep and DMV guidance
Lessons done. Need test prep or a car for the road test.

Test day, handled: refresher lessons and full prep

Two ways to get ready for the road test. Most students use them in combination, but either one works on its own.

💡 Refresher lessons and day-of test prep are not mutually exclusive. Plenty of families schedule a refresher in the days before the test, then add the full test prep package for test day. The two work in sequence: one builds skill, the other handles execution.

A focused lesson scheduled 1-2 weeks ahead of test day. Your instructor walks through DMV expectations, runs a mock road test, flags habits that could cost points on the actual exam, and helps build pre-test confidence.

If you have already booked your DMV slot, let us know which office. We will plan the refresher to cover the roads around that DMV as much as legally possible. The DMV itself prohibits driving the test route during business hours, but our instructors know the streets around the DMVs near Van Nuys and can prepare your student for what they are most likely to see.

The refresher lesson works well on its own, and pairs naturally with the day-of test prep package below.

Of all our options, this is the easiest one for families to manage. After you book the DMV Test Prep package, we work with you to land a DMV appointment that aligns with your schedule and our availability for instructor and vehicle. The scheduling burden lifts off you. Just one heads-up: if you choose this package, please skip booking your own DMV slot, since we may not be available on a self-selected date.

On test day, we pick your student up about an hour before the appointment. Van Nuys families often appreciate the warm-up portion: we run focused practice on streets near the testing DMV, then drive to the appointment in our licensed, insured, and test-ready vehicle. The instructor handles check-in, confirms paperwork, and offers last-minute tips and a confidence boost right before the examiner arrives.

No need to provide a car, arrange a ride, or sort out DMV logistics. We take care of everything.

Already a student: pick-up, practice, and next steps
Need pick-up info, practice tips, or progress guidance

Mid-program? Pick-up, practice, and what's next

Logistics, progress reports, and what to focus on between lessons.

Most Van Nuys families choose home pick-up, since it is the most convenient option. Your instructor arrives directly at your front door at the scheduled time, greets the student, and when a parent is around, briefly walks through the plan beforehand and shares progress at drop-off.

Each lesson has a 15-minute arrival window to allow for traffic. Once your instructor arrives, the full scheduled lesson time is taught in its entirety. No portion gets cut for a late start.

A convenient option on school days or after activities. Students can meet us at or near the front of school on Cedros Ave and Kittridge St. Our vehicles have a large leaf logo on the side. The instructor will exit to greet your student when safe, or your student can approach and enter directly.

Pick-up and drop-off can sometimes be different locations. For example, picked up at Van Nuys High School and dropped at home.

Following every lesson, your instructor sends a written assessment by email to both the student and parent. It covers what the student practiced, how it went, and the priorities for between-lesson work. When a parent is at drop-off, the instructor also takes a few minutes to talk through it in person.

Practice what your most recent lesson covered. The progress report will spell out specifics, but the general principle is simple: get comfortable with what you just learned before stepping up to anything more advanced.

  • Quiet residential streets, good for Level 1 review
  • Empty parking lots, good for parking, turning circles, and low-stakes maneuvering
  • Main streets throughout Van Nuys once residential driving is solid

If you and your parent or guardian are not comfortable practicing a particular skill between lessons, just wait for the next lesson. Don't push into situations that feel unsafe.

We have both male and female instructors on staff, and you can read bios before booking any lesson. Vehicle choice is also flexible: pick between our Toyota Prius and Lexus SUV, both fitted with dual brake controls for instructor safety.

We accommodate instructor and vehicle requests based on availability. Assignments happen on a first-come, first-served basis when you book.

Meet all of our instructors

It is common for students to use both test prep options as a sequence: first a refresher lesson in the days before the road test to polish skills, then our full DMV Test Prep package on test day, when we coordinate the appointment, bring a licensed and insured vehicle, check the student in, and give a final confidence boost before the examiner arrives. Together they cover preparation and execution.
