Where are you in the process?
📋
Getting started: Need a permit first
Haven't taken drivers ed or passed the written test yet

Your California permit, step by step

California has a few requirements to take care of before a teen can legally drive with an instructor.

1
Complete a DMV-approved drivers ed course
The DMV won't let a teen take the written test without an approved drivers ed course on file. Our online version is built to the 30-hour state requirement and is fully self-paced. Some students wrap it up in a few sittings; others spread it across a few weeks. Either way, you finish with a certificate to hand to the DMV clerk.
2
Sit for the DMV written exam
After the course is complete, take the test at any California DMV with a parent or guardian present. The test is identical statewide, so most Valencia families just pick the closest office. (For the road test later it matters more. See our DMV recommendations further down on this page.) If your teen wants targeted help, we run a live Zoom tutoring session focused entirely on the written test.
3
Don't wait on the permit. Book lessons now.
Booking lessons before the permit is issued is allowed and is what we generally suggest. Slots fill in advance, and reserving early means your teen isn't waiting around after passing the written test. The only requirement is that permit information be on file before the lesson actually takes place. For families who want a head start, we also offer a Student License option that lets some students begin training before the permit arrives. We can walk you through it at sign-up.
💡 Most families get both the permit course and driving lessons together. We offer combo packages that cover everything needed to get licensed in California. VHS students get $10 off with code VHSsave10.

Common permit questions

Can my student start driving lessons before getting a permit?
Usually, yes. Reserving lesson dates before the permit arrives is something we recommend, because openings around Valencia tend to go quickly. We just need the permit details on file before the lesson itself. For students who want to start behind-the-wheel training before the permit is in hand, ask us about our Student License option when you sign up.
How long does the online drivers ed course take?
Plan on a 30-hour equivalent, though the schedule is up to your student. The course is self-paced and saves your progress, so it's easy to do a little at a time from a phone, tablet, or computer. There's no clock ticking between sessions.
What if my student doesn't pass the written test the first time?
Retakes are allowed, so a first-time miss isn't a setback. For students who want targeted help before going back in, we offer a live Zoom permit tutoring session with an instructor focused on the written test.
Which DMV should we use for the permit test?
Any office works for the written test, since it's the same computerized exam everywhere. Just choose whatever is convenient. The choice carries more weight for the road test down the road, which we break down in the "Almost ready for the DMV test" section above.

Have a permit: lessons, pick-up, and practice areas
Ready to start behind-the-wheel training

Six lesson levels, one road to the DMV test

Each lesson has its own focus, from quiet residential streets to freeway merges and DMV-road-test practice.

Core

Level 1: Residential foundations

Vehicle basics, steering, braking, right-of-way, and low-traffic Valencia neighborhood streets to build comfort and control.

Core

Level 2: City streets and traffic

Turns, lane changes, speed control, intersections, and main Valencia roads with real traffic flow.

Core

Level 3: Review and freeway intro

Cumulative skill review, first freeway introduction when ready, and a mock DMV assessment to gauge progress.

Advanced

Level 4: Freeway driving

Freeway entry, merging, lane discipline, safe following distance, and I.P.D.E. defensive driving technique.

Advanced

Level 5: Canyons and defensive driving

Real-world driving on roads near Valencia, with a focus on speed control, hazard awareness, and situational judgment.

Test Prep

DMV refresher + day-of test prep

Mock test, common mistake review, confidence building, and use of our vehicle for the road test.

💡 Freeway driving is not introduced before the third lesson, and only happens once the instructor has confirmed the student is genuinely ready. Parents are welcome to request specific skills, but instructors always prioritize what is appropriate for where the student is right now.

Where lessons start

We pick up from home or directly from Valencia High School, whichever fits your family's schedule.

🏠 Home pick-up & drop-off

Most common. Our instructors come to you.
For most families, this is the easiest option. We serve Valencia, and more. Your instructor comes to your front door, greets the student and, when available, a parent before and after the lesson to discuss the plan and share progress.

Pick-up and drop-off are usually the same location, but we can sometimes accommodate a nearby alternate drop-off.

Why between-lesson practice matters

How to make the most of practice time, and what California actually requires before your student can test.

📝 Your instructor follows up after each lesson with a written assessment to the student and parent. Expect a clear summary of what was practiced, how the student performed, and the priorities for between-lesson practice.

There are two California requirements that must be met before a teen can apply for their license:

  • Minimum 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school (this is what our lesson packages cover)
  • Minimum 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a parent, guardian, or licensed instructor. At least 10 hours must be at night

Practice hours can be tracked using our free California driving log. If your student adds individual or custom lessons with us, those count toward the 50-hour total too.

Some VHS students want more behind-the-wheel time than the standard package provides. Individual or custom lessons can be added at any point and are commonly used for:

  • Extra practice on specific skills (freeway driving, parking, canyon roads)
  • Logging additional hours toward the 50-hour DMV requirement
  • Night driving practice with a licensed instructor (counts toward the required 10 nighttime hours)
  • Building confidence before the DMV road test

Ask us about individual lesson options when you sign up or after completing your package.

Practice what was covered in the most recent lesson before advancing to anything new.

  • Quiet residential streets with minimal traffic
  • Empty public parking lots (school or shopping center off-hours)
  • Avoid jumping to busier roads or freeway until the instructor confirms the student is ready

Students who practice between lessons advance significantly faster. Less time reviewing old material means more time building new skills.

We typically recommend spacing lessons across the 6 months students hold their learner's permit. This allows time for real supervised practice between sessions, and helps each lesson build meaningfully on the last. That said, every family's schedule is different. We work around school, sports, and activities.

Completely understandable, and more common than you might think. Families should never feel pressure to practice beyond their comfort level. Simply wait until the next lesson. The instructor will assess readiness and take it from there.

Almost ready for the DMV test: prep and DMV guidance
Lessons done. Need test prep or a car for the road test.

DMV road test prep, Valencia edition

Two ways to get ready for the road test. Most students use them in combination, but either one works on its own.

💡 The refresher lesson and the day-of test prep are not an either/or choice. Many students do a refresher lesson in the days leading up to the test, then use our full test prep package on the day itself. Together they cover both preparation and execution.

This is a single targeted lesson, usually scheduled 1-2 weeks before the test. The instructor reviews DMV expectations, runs a mock road test, points out any habits that could cost points, and gets the student dialed in before test day.

If you have already booked your DMV appointment, share the location with us. We will work to practice nearby beforehand, within legal limits. Keep in mind that DMVs prohibit driving the actual test route during business hours, but our instructors know the roads around local DMV offices well and can prepare your student for similar driving conditions.

Plenty of families use just this. Others combine it with the full test prep package below for end-to-end coverage.

This is the most hands-off path for families. With the DMV Test Prep package booked, we coordinate a DMV appointment that fits both your schedule and our instructor and vehicle availability. You skip the scheduling headache. One important note: if you go with this package, please do not book your own DMV slot separately, since we may not have coverage for that date.

On test day, we pick your student up about an hour before the appointment. Valencia families often appreciate the warm-up portion: we run focused practice on streets near the testing DMV, then drive to the appointment in our licensed, insured, and test-ready vehicle. The instructor handles check-in, confirms paperwork, and offers last-minute tips and a confidence boost right before the examiner arrives.

Families don't need to bring their own car, figure out the drive to the DMV, or untangle paperwork. All of that is handled for you.

Logistics, progress reports, and what to focus on between lessons.

Home pick-up is the most popular option, and the most convenient for most families. The instructor arrives at your front door at the scheduled time, greets the student, and (when a parent is around) briefly goes over the lesson plan beforehand and shares progress notes at drop-off.

Valencia driving school lessons have a 15-minute arrival window to account for traffic. All lesson time is always taught in full from the moment the instructor arrives.

A convenient option on school days or after activities. Students can meet us at or near the front of school on Dickason Dr. Our vehicles have a large leaf logo on the side. The instructor will exit to greet your student when safe, or your student can approach and enter directly.

Pick-up and drop-off can sometimes be different locations. For example, picked up at Valencia High School and dropped at home.

Following every lesson, your instructor sends a written assessment by email to both the student and parent. It covers what the student practiced, how it went, and the priorities for between-lesson work. When a parent is at drop-off, the instructor also takes a few minutes to talk through it in person.

Stick to what was covered in the most recent lesson. Your progress report will have specific guidance. The general rule: master that skill before moving to anything more advanced.

  • Quiet residential streets, good for Level 1 review
  • Empty parking lots, good for parking, turning circles, and low-stakes maneuvering
  • Main streets throughout Valencia once residential driving is solid

When a student and parent or guardian don't feel ready to practice a skill without an instructor, the best choice is to wait for the next lesson. Don't take on situations that feel unsafe.

Male and female instructors are both available, and you can read bios before booking any lesson. You can also switch between our Toyota Prius and Lexus SUV, both equipped with dual brake controls for instructor safety.

We accommodate instructor and vehicle requests based on availability. Assignments happen on a first-come, first-served basis when you book.

Meet all of our instructors

It is common for students to use both test prep options as a sequence: first a refresher lesson in the days before the road test to polish skills, then our full DMV Test Prep package on test day, when we coordinate the appointment, bring a licensed and insured vehicle, check the student in, and give a final confidence boost before the examiner arrives. Together they cover preparation and execution.
