Where are you in the process?
📋
Getting started: Need a permit first
Haven't taken drivers ed or passed the written test yet

Your California permit, step by step

California's permit process is simple once you know the order. Here's the path most Chatsworth families take.

1
Earn your drivers ed completion certificate
Before a teen can sit for the written test, California requires a state-approved drivers ed course. Ours is online and self-paced, built to the 30-hour standard. Students log in and out as they go, which is helpful when school and after-school activities are in full swing. The completion certificate is what the DMV needs.
2
Take the DMV written knowledge test
After the course is complete, take the test at any California DMV with a parent or guardian present. The test is identical statewide, so most Chatsworth families just pick the closest office. (For the road test later it matters more. See our DMV recommendations further down on this page.) If your teen wants targeted help, we run a live Zoom tutoring session focused entirely on the written test.
3
Don't wait on the permit. Book lessons now.
Lesson dates can be booked before the permit is even issued, and we recommend it. Chatsworth-area slots tend to fill up quickly, especially in spring and summer when school schedules open up. The earlier you reserve, the less time you'll spend waiting after the written test. We just need permit information on file before the lesson takes place. There's also a Student License option for families who want to start training before the permit arrives. Ask us about it when you sign up.
💡 Most families get both the permit course and driving lessons together. We offer combo packages that cover everything needed to get licensed in California. SCS students get $10 off with code SCSsave10.

Common permit questions

Can my student start driving lessons before getting a permit?
Usually, yes. Reserving lesson dates before the permit arrives is something we recommend, because openings around Chatsworth tend to go quickly. We just need the permit details on file before the lesson itself. For students who want to start behind-the-wheel training before the permit is in hand, ask us about our Student License option when you sign up.
How long does the online drivers ed course take?
The course is a 30-hour equivalent, but students set their own pace completely. Some work through it over a few days; others spread it across a few weeks. You can start, stop, and resume anytime from any device. There's no timer running when you're not actively studying.
What if my student doesn't pass the written test the first time?
The DMV allows retakes. We offer a live permit test tutoring session via Zoom with one of our instructors for students who want extra help before trying again.
Which DMV should we use for the permit test?
For the written test it makes no difference. The computerized exam is identical at every office, so the closest DMV to Chatsworth is usually the easy pick. Where the office actually matters is the road test later, and we cover that in the "Almost ready for the DMV test" section above.

Have a permit: lessons, pick-up, and practice areas
Ready to start behind-the-wheel training

Six lesson levels, one road to the DMV test

Most students choose either a 6-hour or 10-hour package, then move through levels at their own pace as the instructor confirms readiness.

Core

Level 1: Residential foundations

Vehicle basics, steering, braking, right-of-way, and low-traffic Chatsworth neighborhood streets to build comfort and control.

Core

Level 2: City streets and traffic

Turns, lane changes, speed control, intersections, and main Chatsworth roads with real traffic flow.

Core

Level 3: Review and freeway intro

Cumulative skill review, first freeway introduction when ready, and a mock DMV assessment to gauge progress.

Advanced

Level 4: Freeway driving

Freeway entry, merging, lane discipline, safe following distance, and I.P.D.E. defensive driving technique.

Advanced

Level 5: Canyons and defensive driving

Real-world driving on roads near Chatsworth, with a focus on speed control, hazard awareness, and situational judgment.

Test Prep

DMV refresher + day-of test prep

Mock test, common mistake review, confidence building, and use of our vehicle for the road test.

💡 We never introduce freeway driving before the third lesson, and even then only when the instructor has confirmed the student is genuinely ready for it. Parents can absolutely request specific skills, but instructor judgment about the student's current level always comes first.

Where lessons start

We pick up from home or directly from Sierra Canyon School, whichever fits your family's schedule.

🏠 Home pick-up & drop-off

Most common. Our instructors come to you.
For most families, this is the easiest option. We serve Chatsworth, and more. Your instructor comes to your front door, greets the student and, when available, a parent before and after the lesson to discuss the plan and share progress.

Pick-up and drop-off are usually the same location, but we can sometimes accommodate a nearby alternate drop-off.

Unless circumstances make it impractical, or a family requests otherwise, instructors always walk to the front door to greet the student at the start of each lesson and escort them back at the end. If a parent is available, the instructor will take a moment to introduce themselves and discuss the plan before heading out.

Why between-lesson practice matters

What to do between sessions, and how California's requirements shape the process.

📝 Every lesson ends with a personal written assessment from your instructor, sent to both student and parent. It covers what was worked on, how it went, and the specific skills to focus on before the next session.

Before a California teen can apply for a license, two requirements must be met:

  • Minimum 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school (this is what our lesson packages cover)
  • Minimum 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a parent, guardian, or licensed instructor. At least 10 hours must be at night

Practice hours can be tracked using our free California driving log. If your student adds individual or custom lessons with us, those count toward the 50-hour total too.

Beyond the standard package, students can add individual or custom lessons whenever they want. They are useful for:

  • Extra practice on specific skills (freeway driving, parking, canyon roads)
  • Logging additional hours toward the 50-hour DMV requirement
  • Night driving practice with a licensed instructor (counts toward the required 10 nighttime hours)
  • Building confidence before the DMV road test

Just ask about individual lesson options at sign-up, or anytime after your package is finished.

Stick with what was covered in the last lesson before moving on to anything new. Familiar Chatsworth streets are perfect for this kind of low-pressure repetition.

  • Quiet residential streets with minimal traffic
  • Empty public parking lots (school or shopping center off-hours)
  • Avoid jumping to busier roads or freeway until the instructor confirms the student is ready

Students who practice between lessons advance significantly faster. Less time reviewing old material means more time building new skills.

Spreading lessons across the full 6 months of the learner's permit is what we usually recommend. It gives families time for supervised practice between sessions, and each lesson can build meaningfully on the previous one. We know SCS families juggle school, sports, and activities, so we plan around your schedule when needed.

Completely understandable, and more common than you might think. Families should never feel pressure to practice beyond their comfort level. Simply wait until the next lesson. The instructor will assess readiness and take it from there.

Almost ready for the DMV test: prep and DMV guidance
Lessons done. Need test prep or a car for the road test.

Two ways we help you pass the DMV road test

Two ways to get ready for the road test. Most students use them in combination, but either one works on its own.

💡 The refresher lesson and the day-of test prep are not an either/or choice. Many students do a refresher lesson in the days leading up to the test, then use our full test prep package on the day itself. Together they cover both preparation and execution.

A targeted lesson 1-2 weeks before your scheduled test. Your instructor runs through DMV expectations, conducts a mock road test, identifies habits that could cost points, and builds confidence before test day.

If you have already booked your DMV slot, let us know which office. We will plan the refresher to cover the roads around that DMV as much as legally possible. The DMV itself prohibits driving the test route during business hours, but our instructors know the streets around the DMVs near Chatsworth and can prepare your student for what they are most likely to see.

The refresher lesson works well on its own, and pairs naturally with the day-of test prep package below.

This is the most hands-off path for families. With the DMV Test Prep package booked, we coordinate a DMV appointment that fits both your schedule and our instructor and vehicle availability. You skip the scheduling headache. One important note: if you go with this package, please do not book your own DMV slot separately, since we may not have coverage for that date.

On the day of the test, we pick the student up roughly an hour ahead of the appointment, warm up with focused practice on roads near the DMV, then drive to the test in our licensed, insured, and test-ready vehicle. The instructor handles check-in, makes sure all paperwork is correct, and gives last-minute tips and encouragement right before the examiner arrives.

You don't need to provide a car, arrange transportation, or navigate DMV logistics. We handle it all.

Already a student: pick-up, practice, and next steps
Need pick-up info, practice tips, or progress guidance

Quick guide for active SCS families

Logistics, progress reports, and what to focus on between lessons.

Most Chatsworth families choose home pick-up, since it is the most convenient option. Your instructor arrives directly at your front door at the scheduled time, greets the student, and when a parent is around, briefly walks through the plan beforehand and shares progress at drop-off.

There is a 15-minute arrival window built into every lesson to account for traffic. Lesson time is always taught in full from the moment the instructor arrives, with no portion shaved off because of a delayed start.

A convenient option on school days or after activities. Students can meet us at or near the front of the school on Rinaldi St near the second set of steps with the blue cones. Our vehicles have a large leaf logo on the side. The instructor will exit to greet your student when safe, or your student can approach and enter directly.

Pick-up and drop-off can sometimes be different locations. For example, picked up at Sierra Canyon School and dropped at home.

Pick-up spot: Chatsworth

Following every lesson, your instructor sends a written assessment by email to both the student and parent. It covers what the student practiced, how it went, and the priorities for between-lesson work. When a parent is at drop-off, the instructor also takes a few minutes to talk through it in person.

Practice what your most recent lesson covered. The progress report will spell out specifics, but the general principle is simple: get comfortable with what you just learned before stepping up to anything more advanced.

  • Quiet residential streets, good for Level 1 review
  • Empty parking lots, good for parking, turning circles, and low-stakes maneuvering
  • Main streets throughout Chatsworth once residential driving is solid

When a student and parent or guardian don't feel ready to practice a skill without an instructor, the best choice is to wait for the next lesson. Don't take on situations that feel unsafe.

We have both male and female instructors on staff, and you can read bios before booking any lesson. Vehicle choice is also flexible: pick between our Toyota Prius and Lexus SUV, both fitted with dual brake controls for instructor safety.

Instructor and vehicle preferences are accommodated based on availability and are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis at time of booking.

Meet all of our instructors

Many students use both of our test prep options together: a refresher lesson in the days before the test to sharpen skills, followed by our full DMV Test Prep package on test day where we handle scheduling, bring a licensed and insured vehicle, check the student in, and provide a confidence boost right before the examiner arrives. They work well in sequence.
