Getting started: Need a permit first
Haven't taken drivers ed or passed the written test yet

Getting your permit: what you need

California's permit process is simple once you know the order. Here's the path most Burbank families take.

1
Finish an approved drivers ed course
California law requires an approved online or classroom course before you can take the written test. Our online course is a 30-hour equivalent. Students work entirely at their own pace, spreading it over a few days or a few weeks depending on their schedule and learning style. You'll receive a completion certificate to bring to the DMV.
2
Pass the DMV written (knowledge) test
Once drivers ed is done, head to any DMV office with a parent or guardian to take the written test. The closest DMV to Burbank is usually the easy choice for the written test. Since the test itself is identical at every location, picking the most convenient one makes sense. We also offer a one-on-one permit test tutoring session over Zoom for students who want extra prep.
3
Book your driving lessons. You don't have to wait.
Lesson dates can be booked before the permit is even issued, and we recommend it. Burbank-area slots tend to fill up quickly, especially in spring and summer when school schedules open up. The earlier you reserve, the less time you'll spend waiting after the written test. We just need permit information on file before the lesson takes place. There's also a Student License option for families who want to start training before the permit arrives. Ask us about it when you sign up.
💡 Most families get both the permit course and driving lessons together. We offer combo packages that cover everything needed to get licensed in California. PHS students get $10 off with code PHSsave10.

Common permit questions

Can my student start driving lessons before getting a permit?
In most cases you can. Permit information only needs to be on file before the actual lesson, so reserving dates early is smart and keeps your student from waiting once the permit comes through. There is also a Student License path for those who qualify and want to get started sooner. Just ask when you enroll.
How long does the online drivers ed course take?
It's a 30-hour equivalent that runs entirely at the student's pace. A few teens finish in a handful of sittings, while others stretch it over a couple of weeks around school and activities. You log in and out from any device, and nothing counts against you while you're away.
What if my student doesn't pass the written test the first time?
The DMV allows retakes. We offer a live permit test tutoring session via Zoom with one of our instructors for students who want extra help before trying again.
Which DMV should we use for the permit test?
For the written test, location doesn't matter. It's the same computerized test at every office. Pick whichever is most convenient. DMV location matters more for the road test later; we have guidance on that in the "Almost ready for the DMV test" section above.

Inside our PHS driving lessons

Skill builds level by level. Students typically complete the 6 or 10-hour program over several weeks, with practice between sessions reinforcing what was learned.

Core

Level 1: Residential foundations

Vehicle basics, steering, braking, right-of-way, and low-traffic Burbank neighborhood streets to build comfort and control.

Core

Level 2: City streets and traffic

Turns, lane changes, speed control, intersections, and main Burbank roads with real traffic flow.

Core

Level 3: Review and freeway intro

Cumulative skill review, first freeway introduction when ready, and a mock DMV assessment to gauge progress.

Advanced

Level 4: Freeway driving

Freeway entry, merging, lane discipline, safe following distance, and I.P.D.E. defensive driving technique.

Advanced

Level 5: Canyons and defensive driving

Real-world driving on roads near Burbank, with a focus on speed control, hazard awareness, and situational judgment.

Test Prep

DMV refresher + day-of test prep

Mock test, common mistake review, confidence building, and use of our vehicle for the road test.

💡 We never introduce freeway driving before the third lesson, and even then only when the instructor has confirmed the student is genuinely ready for it. Parents can absolutely request specific skills, but instructor judgment about the student's current level always comes first.

Where lessons start

We pick up from home or directly from Providence High School, whichever fits your family's schedule.

🏠 Home pick-up & drop-off

Most common. Our instructors come to you.
For most families, this is the easiest option. We serve Burbank, and more. Your instructor comes to your front door, greets the student and, when available, a parent before and after the lesson to discuss the plan and share progress.

Pick-up and drop-off are usually the same location, but we can sometimes accommodate a nearby alternate drop-off.

What to work on between sessions with your instructor

How to make the most of practice time, and what California actually requires before your student can test.

📝 After every lesson, your driving instructor sends a personal written assessment to both student and parent, covering what was practiced, how it went, and exactly what to work on before the next session.

Before a California teen can apply for a license, two requirements must be met:

  • Minimum 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school (this is what our lesson packages cover)
  • Minimum 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a parent, guardian, or licensed instructor. At least 10 hours must be at night

Those 50 hours can be tracked using our free California driving log. Time spent in individual or custom lessons with our instructors counts toward the total.

Some PHS students want more behind-the-wheel time than the standard package provides. Individual or custom lessons can be added at any point and are commonly used for:

  • Extra practice on specific skills (freeway driving, parking, canyon roads)
  • Logging additional hours toward the 50-hour DMV requirement
  • Night driving practice with a licensed instructor (counts toward the required 10 nighttime hours)
  • Building confidence before the DMV road test

If individual lessons sound useful, mention it when you sign up, or get in touch once your package is completed.

Practice what was covered in the most recent lesson before advancing to anything new.

  • Quiet residential streets with minimal traffic
  • Empty public parking lots (school or shopping center off-hours)
  • Avoid jumping to busier roads or freeway until the instructor confirms the student is ready

Students who put in regular practice between lessons progress noticeably faster. Less time spent revisiting old material means more time learning new skills.

We typically recommend spacing lessons across the 6 months students hold their learner's permit. This allows time for real supervised practice between sessions, and helps each lesson build meaningfully on the last. That said, every family's schedule is different. We work around school, sports, and activities.

It is more common than you might think, and completely understandable. Parents and students should not feel pressure to practice beyond their comfort zone. Wait for the next lesson, and your instructor will assess readiness and pick up from there.

Almost ready for the DMV test: prep and DMV guidance
Lessons done. Need test prep or a car for the road test.

Getting ready for your road test

Most PHS students use one or both of these before test day. They work well together.

💡 The refresher lesson and the day-of test prep are not an either/or choice. Many students do a refresher lesson in the days leading up to the test, then use our full test prep package on the day itself. Together they cover both preparation and execution.

This is a single targeted lesson, usually scheduled 1-2 weeks before the test. The instructor reviews DMV expectations, runs a mock road test, points out any habits that could cost points, and gets the student dialed in before test day.

If you have already booked your DMV appointment, share the location with us. We will work to practice nearby beforehand, within legal limits. Keep in mind that DMVs prohibit driving the actual test route during business hours, but our instructors know the roads around local DMV offices well and can prepare your student for similar driving conditions.

This lesson works great on its own, and pairs naturally with the day-of test prep below.

Of all our options, this is the easiest one for families to manage. After you book the DMV Test Prep package, we work with you to land a DMV appointment that aligns with your schedule and our availability for instructor and vehicle. The scheduling burden lifts off you. Just one heads-up: if you choose this package, please skip booking your own DMV slot, since we may not be available on a self-selected date.

On the day of the test, we pick the student up roughly an hour ahead of the appointment, warm up with focused practice on roads near the DMV, then drive to the test in our licensed, insured, and test-ready vehicle. The instructor handles check-in, makes sure all paperwork is correct, and gives last-minute tips and encouragement right before the examiner arrives.

Families don't need to bring their own car, figure out the drive to the DMV, or untangle paperwork. All of that is handled for you.

Logistics, progress reports, and what to focus on between lessons.

Most Burbank families choose home pick-up, since it is the most convenient option. Your instructor arrives directly at your front door at the scheduled time, greets the student, and when a parent is around, briefly walks through the plan beforehand and shares progress at drop-off.

Burbank driving school lessons have a 15-minute arrival window to account for traffic. All lesson time is always taught in full from the moment the instructor arrives.

A convenient option on school days or after activities. Students can meet us at or near the security booth just inside the S Buena Vista St entrance, across from the visitor parking spaces. Our vehicles have a large leaf logo on the side. The instructor will exit to greet your student when safe, or your student can approach and enter directly.

Pick-up and drop-off can sometimes be different locations. For example, picked up at Providence High School and dropped at home.

After every lesson, your instructor emails a personal written assessment to both student and parent: what was practiced, how it went, and what to work on before the next session. If a parent is available at drop-off, the instructor will take a few minutes to review in person.

Practice what was covered in the most recent lesson, ideally on familiar Burbank streets where stress is lower. The progress report will give you specific guidance, but the rule of thumb is to master that skill before moving on to anything more advanced.

  • Quiet residential streets, good for Level 1 review
  • Empty parking lots, good for parking, turning circles, and low-stakes maneuvering
  • Main streets throughout Burbank once residential driving is solid

If a particular skill feels uncomfortable for you and your student to practice, it's okay to wait until the next lesson. Don't push into anything that feels unsafe.

You can choose between male and female instructors, and bios are available to read before booking. Vehicle preference is also yours to set: families pick between our Toyota Prius and Lexus SUV, each equipped with dual brake controls for instructor safety.

Both instructor and vehicle preferences are honored where possible, subject to availability. Assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis at the time of booking.

Meet all of our instructors

It is common for students to use both test prep options as a sequence: first a refresher lesson in the days before the road test to polish skills, then our full DMV Test Prep package on test day, when we coordinate the appointment, bring a licensed and insured vehicle, check the student in, and give a final confidence boost before the examiner arrives. Together they cover preparation and execution.
