Where are you in the process?
📋
Getting started: Need a permit first
Haven't taken drivers ed or passed the written test yet

Before you can drive: the permit basics

California's permit process is simple once you know the order. Here's the path most Westlake Village families take.

1
Earn your drivers ed completion certificate
California requires drivers ed before any teen can take the DMV written test. Our online course is a 30-hour equivalent that students complete on their own schedule, often over the course of a couple of weeks alongside school and activities. Once finished, you'll get the completion certificate the DMV needs to see.
2
Pass the DMV written (knowledge) test
After completing drivers ed, take the written test at any DMV office with a parent or guardian. Most Westlake Village families just go to the closest one. We offer a live permit test tutoring session (Zoom) for students who want one-on-one prep before their attempt.
3
Lock in your lesson dates ahead of time
You don't need a permit in hand to put lesson dates on the calendar. In fact, we encourage OCS families to reserve early. Slots fill up, particularly during finals season and summer, and booking ahead means your teen isn't sitting around waiting weeks after passing the written test. Permit info just needs to be on file by the time of the first lesson. If your student wants to start even sooner, our Student License option lets some students begin training before the permit is issued. Ask us about it during sign up.
💡 Most families get both the permit course and driving lessons together. We offer combo packages that cover everything needed to get licensed in California. OCS students get $10 off with code OCSsave10.

Common permit questions

Can my student start driving lessons before getting a permit?
Usually, yes. Reserving lesson dates before the permit arrives is something we recommend, because openings around Westlake Village tend to go quickly. We just need the permit details on file before the lesson itself. For students who want to start behind-the-wheel training before the permit is in hand, ask us about our Student License option when you sign up.
How long does the online drivers ed course take?
The course is a 30-hour equivalent, but students set their own pace completely. Some work through it over a few days; others spread it across a few weeks. You can start, stop, and resume anytime from any device. There's no timer running when you're not actively studying.
What if my student doesn't pass the written test the first time?
Retakes are allowed, so a first-time miss isn't a setback. For students who want targeted help before going back in, we offer a live Zoom permit tutoring session with an instructor focused on the written test.
Which DMV should we use for the permit test?
For the written test, location doesn't matter. It's the same computerized test at every office. Pick whichever is most convenient. DMV location matters more for the road test later; we have guidance on that in the "Almost ready for the DMV test" section above.

Have a permit: lessons, pick-up, and practice areas
Ready to start behind-the-wheel training

Six lesson levels, one road to the DMV test

Most students choose either a 6-hour or 10-hour package, then move through levels at their own pace as the instructor confirms readiness.

Core

Level 1: Residential foundations

Vehicle basics, steering, braking, right-of-way, and low-traffic Westlake Village neighborhood streets to build comfort and control.

Core

Level 2: City streets and traffic

Turns, lane changes, speed control, intersections, and main Westlake Village roads with real traffic flow.

Core

Level 3: Review and freeway intro

Cumulative skill review, first freeway introduction when ready, and a mock DMV assessment to gauge progress.

Advanced

Level 4: Freeway driving

Freeway entry, merging, lane discipline, safe following distance, and I.P.D.E. defensive driving technique.

Advanced

Level 5: Canyons and defensive driving

Real-world driving on roads near Westlake Village, with a focus on speed control, hazard awareness, and situational judgment.

Test Prep

DMV refresher + day-of test prep

Mock test, common mistake review, confidence building, and use of our vehicle for the road test.

💡 Freeway driving is not introduced before the third lesson, and only happens once the instructor has confirmed the student is genuinely ready. Parents are welcome to request specific skills, but instructors always prioritize what is appropriate for where the student is right now.

Where lessons start

We pick up from home or directly from Oaks Christian School, whichever fits your family's schedule.

🏠 Home pick-up & drop-off

Most common. Our instructors come to you.
For most families, this is the easiest option. We serve Westlake Village, and more. Your instructor comes to your front door, greets the student and, when available, a parent before and after the lesson to discuss the plan and share progress.

Pick-up and drop-off are usually the same location, but we can sometimes accommodate a nearby alternate drop-off.

If a parent is available, the instructor will take a moment to introduce themselves and discuss the plan before heading out.

Why between-lesson practice matters

What to do between sessions, and how California's requirements shape the process.

📝 Every lesson ends with a personal written assessment from your instructor, sent to both student and parent. It covers what was worked on, how it went, and the specific skills to focus on before the next session.

There are two California requirements that must be met before a teen can apply for their license:

  • Minimum 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school (this is what our lesson packages cover)
  • Minimum 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a parent, guardian, or licensed instructor. At least 10 hours must be at night

Practice hours can be tracked using our free California driving log. If your student adds individual or custom lessons with us, those count toward the 50-hour total too.

Some OCS students want more behind-the-wheel time than the standard package provides. Individual or custom lessons can be added at any point and are commonly used for:

  • Extra practice on specific skills (freeway driving, parking, canyon roads)
  • Logging additional hours toward the 50-hour DMV requirement
  • Night driving practice with a licensed instructor (counts toward the required 10 nighttime hours)
  • Building confidence before the DMV road test

If individual lessons sound useful, mention it when you sign up, or get in touch once your package is completed.

Practice the skills from the most recent lesson before progressing further. The quieter neighborhoods around Westlake Village work well for this.

  • Quiet residential streets with minimal traffic
  • Empty public parking lots (school or shopping center off-hours)
  • Avoid jumping to busier roads or freeway until the instructor confirms the student is ready

Students who put in regular practice between lessons progress noticeably faster. Less time spent revisiting old material means more time learning new skills.

Our usual recommendation is to spread lessons across the full 6 months of the learner's permit. That gives families time for real supervised practice in between, and lets each lesson build meaningfully on the last. Every family's schedule is different though, so we work around school, sports, and other activities.

Completely understandable, and more common than you might think. Families should never feel pressure to practice beyond their comfort level. Simply wait until the next lesson. The instructor will assess readiness and take it from there.

Almost ready for the DMV test: prep and DMV guidance
Lessons done. Need test prep or a car for the road test.

Two ways we help you pass the DMV road test

Most OCS students use one or both of these before test day. They work well together.

💡 Refresher lessons and day-of test prep are not mutually exclusive. Plenty of families schedule a refresher in the days before the test, then add the full test prep package for test day. The two work in sequence: one builds skill, the other handles execution.

A targeted lesson 1-2 weeks before your scheduled test. Your instructor runs through DMV expectations, conducts a mock road test, identifies habits that could cost points, and builds confidence before test day.

If you've already booked your own DMV appointment, let us know the location. We'll do our best to practice in that area beforehand, within legal limits. Note that DMVs prohibit driving the actual test route during active business hours, but we know the surrounding roads well and can prepare your student accordingly.

This lesson works great on its own, and pairs naturally with the day-of test prep below.

This is the most hands-off path for families. With the DMV Test Prep package booked, we coordinate a DMV appointment that fits both your schedule and our instructor and vehicle availability. You skip the scheduling headache. One important note: if you go with this package, please do not book your own DMV slot separately, since we may not have coverage for that date.

On test day, we pick your student up about an hour before the appointment, warm up with focused practice near the DMV, then drive to the test in our licensed, insured, and test-ready vehicle. Our instructor checks the student in, makes sure all paperwork is in order, and provides last-minute tips and a confidence boost right before the examiner arrives.

You don't need to provide a car, arrange transportation, or navigate DMV logistics. We handle it all.

Already a student: pick-up, practice, and next steps
Need pick-up info, practice tips, or progress guidance

For current students and families

Quick answers on pick-up, progress reports, practice, and next steps.

Home pick-up is the most popular option, and the most convenient for most families. The instructor arrives at your front door at the scheduled time, greets the student, and (when a parent is around) briefly goes over the lesson plan beforehand and shares progress notes at drop-off.

Each lesson has a 15-minute arrival window to allow for traffic. Once your instructor arrives, the full scheduled lesson time is taught in its entirety. No portion gets cut for a late start.

A convenient option on school days or after activities. Students can meet us at or near the circular driveway in front of the admin building. Our vehicles have a large leaf logo on the side. The instructor will exit to greet your student when safe, or your student can approach and enter directly.

Pick-up and drop-off can sometimes be different locations. For example, picked up at Oaks Christian School and dropped at home.

Pick-up spot: Westlake Village

Each lesson is followed by a personal written assessment, emailed to both the student and parent. The report breaks down what was covered, how the student performed, and what to focus on before next time. If a parent is around at drop-off, your instructor will also walk through it in person for a few minutes.

Stick to what was covered in the most recent lesson. Your progress report will have specific guidance. The general rule: master that skill before moving to anything more advanced.

  • Quiet residential streets, good for Level 1 review
  • Empty parking lots, good for parking, turning circles, and low-stakes maneuvering
  • Main streets throughout Westlake Village once residential driving is solid

When a student and parent or guardian don't feel ready to practice a skill without an instructor, the best choice is to wait for the next lesson. Don't take on situations that feel unsafe.

We have both male and female instructors on staff, and you can read bios before booking any lesson. Vehicle choice is also flexible: pick between our Toyota Prius and Lexus SUV, both fitted with dual brake controls for instructor safety.

Both instructor and vehicle preferences are honored where possible, subject to availability. Assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis at the time of booking.

Meet all of our instructors

It is common for students to use both test prep options as a sequence: first a refresher lesson in the days before the road test to polish skills, then our full DMV Test Prep package on test day, when we coordinate the appointment, bring a licensed and insured vehicle, check the student in, and give a final confidence boost before the examiner arrives. Together they cover preparation and execution.
