Where are you in the process?
📋
Getting started: Need a permit first
Haven't taken drivers ed or passed the written test yet

Your California permit, step by step

Before a California teen can drive with one of our instructors, a few key steps need to happen first.

1
Complete a DMV-approved drivers ed course
California law requires an approved online or classroom course before you can take the written test. Our online course is a 30-hour equivalent. Students work entirely at their own pace, spreading it over a few days or a few weeks depending on their schedule and learning style. You'll receive a completion certificate to bring to the DMV.
2
Sit for the DMV written exam
Once drivers ed is done, head to any DMV office with a parent or guardian to take the written test. The closest DMV to Los Angeles is usually the easy choice for the written test. Since the test itself is identical at every location, picking the most convenient one makes sense. We also offer a one-on-one permit test tutoring session over Zoom for students who want extra prep.
3
Reserve your driving lessons early
Booking lessons before the permit is issued is allowed and is what we generally suggest. Slots fill in advance, and reserving early means your teen isn't waiting around after passing the written test. The only requirement is that permit information be on file before the lesson actually takes place. For families who want a head start, we also offer a Student License option that lets some students begin training before the permit arrives. We can walk you through it at sign-up.
💡 Most families get both the permit course and driving lessons together. We offer combo packages that cover everything needed to get licensed in California. MCS students get $10 off with code MCSsave10.

Common permit questions

Can my student start driving lessons before getting a permit?
In most cases, yes. We actually encourage families to reserve lesson dates before the permit is issued, since slots fill up. Your student's permit information just needs to be provided before the lesson takes place. We also offer a Student License option for qualifying students who want to begin behind-the-wheel training before their learner's permit is in hand. Ask us about this when you sign up.
How long does the online drivers ed course take?
The course is a 30-hour equivalent, but students set their own pace completely. Some work through it over a few days; others spread it across a few weeks. You can start, stop, and resume anytime from any device. There's no timer running when you're not actively studying.
What if my student doesn't pass the written test the first time?
No problem, the DMV lets students retake the written test. If your teen wants to feel more prepared before the next attempt, we run a one-on-one permit tutoring session over Zoom with one of our instructors.
Which DMV should we use for the permit test?
Any office works for the written test, since it's the same computerized exam everywhere. Just choose whatever is convenient. The choice carries more weight for the road test down the road, which we break down in the "Almost ready for the DMV test" section above.

Inside our MCS driving lessons

Lessons are taught in stages. Most driving school students in Los Angeles do 6 or 10 hours total, advancing through levels based on readiness and real-world practice between sessions.

Core

Level 1: Residential foundations

Vehicle basics, steering, braking, right-of-way, and low-traffic Los Angeles neighborhood streets to build comfort and control.

Core

Level 2: City streets and traffic

Turns, lane changes, speed control, intersections, and main Los Angeles roads with real traffic flow.

Core

Level 3: Review and freeway intro

Cumulative skill review, first freeway introduction when ready, and a mock DMV assessment to gauge progress.

Advanced

Level 4: Freeway driving

Freeway entry, merging, lane discipline, safe following distance, and I.P.D.E. defensive driving technique.

Advanced

Level 5: Canyons and defensive driving

Real-world driving on roads near Los Angeles, with a focus on speed control, hazard awareness, and situational judgment.

Test Prep

DMV refresher + day-of test prep

Mock test, common mistake review, confidence building, and use of our vehicle for the road test.

💡 We never introduce freeway driving before the third lesson, and even then only when the instructor has confirmed the student is genuinely ready for it. Parents can absolutely request specific skills, but instructor judgment about the student's current level always comes first.

Where lessons start

We pick up from home or directly from Milken Community School, whichever fits your family's schedule.

🏠 Home pick-up & drop-off

Most common. Our instructors come to you.
For most families, this is the easiest option. We serve Los Angeles, and more. Your instructor comes to your front door, greets the student and, when available, a parent before and after the lesson to discuss the plan and share progress.

Pick-up and drop-off are usually the same location, but we can sometimes accommodate a nearby alternate drop-off.

Every instructor arrives in a clearly marked Drivers Ed Direct vehicle with our leaf logo on the side, and wears a company uniform on every lesson. Unless circumstances make it impractical, or a family requests otherwise, instructors always walk to the front door to greet the student at the start of each lesson and escort them back at the end. If a parent is available, the instructor will take a moment to introduce themselves and discuss the plan before heading out.

Why between-lesson practice matters

How to make the most of practice time, and what California actually requires before your student can test.

📝 Every lesson ends with a personal written assessment from your instructor, sent to both student and parent. It covers what was worked on, how it went, and the specific skills to focus on before the next session.

Before a California teen can apply for a license, two requirements must be met:

  • Minimum 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school (this is what our lesson packages cover)
  • Minimum 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a parent, guardian, or licensed instructor. At least 10 hours must be at night

Practice hours can be tracked using our free California driving log. If your student adds individual or custom lessons with us, those count toward the 50-hour total too.

Some MCS students want more behind-the-wheel time than the standard package provides. Individual or custom lessons can be added at any point and are commonly used for:

  • Extra practice on specific skills (freeway driving, parking, canyon roads)
  • Logging additional hours toward the 50-hour DMV requirement
  • Night driving practice with a licensed instructor (counts toward the required 10 nighttime hours)
  • Building confidence before the DMV road test

Ask us about individual lesson options when you sign up or after completing your package.

Practice the skills from the most recent lesson before progressing further. The quieter neighborhoods around Los Angeles work well for this.

  • Quiet residential streets with minimal traffic
  • Empty public parking lots (school or shopping center off-hours)
  • Avoid jumping to busier roads or freeway until the instructor confirms the student is ready

Students who practice in their own Los Angeles neighborhoods between lessons typically progress faster. Less time spent reviewing old skills means more time gained on new ones.

We typically recommend spacing lessons across the 6 months students hold their learner's permit. This allows time for real supervised practice between sessions, and helps each lesson build meaningfully on the last. That said, every family's schedule is different. We work around school, sports, and activities.

Completely understandable, and more common than you might think. Families should never feel pressure to practice beyond their comfort level. Simply wait until the next lesson. The instructor will assess readiness and take it from there.

Almost ready for the DMV test: prep and DMV guidance
Lessons done. Need test prep or a car for the road test.

Two ways we help you pass the DMV road test

Most MCS students use one or both of these before test day. They work well together.

💡 Refresher lessons and day-of test prep are not mutually exclusive. Plenty of families schedule a refresher in the days before the test, then add the full test prep package for test day. The two work in sequence: one builds skill, the other handles execution.

A targeted lesson 1-2 weeks before your scheduled test. Your instructor runs through DMV expectations, conducts a mock road test, identifies habits that could cost points, and builds confidence before test day.

If you've already booked your own DMV appointment, let us know the location. We'll do our best to practice in that area beforehand, within legal limits. Note that DMVs prohibit driving the actual test route during active business hours, but we know the surrounding roads well and can prepare your student accordingly.

This lesson works great on its own, and pairs naturally with the day-of test prep below.

Of all our options, this is the easiest one for families to manage. After you book the DMV Test Prep package, we work with you to land a DMV appointment that aligns with your schedule and our availability for instructor and vehicle. The scheduling burden lifts off you. Just one heads-up: if you choose this package, please skip booking your own DMV slot, since we may not be available on a self-selected date.

On the day of the test, we pick the student up roughly an hour ahead of the appointment, warm up with focused practice on roads near the DMV, then drive to the test in our licensed, insured, and test-ready vehicle. The instructor handles check-in, makes sure all paperwork is correct, and gives last-minute tips and encouragement right before the examiner arrives.

Families don't need to bring their own car, figure out the drive to the DMV, or untangle paperwork. All of that is handled for you.

Already a student: pick-up, practice, and next steps
Need pick-up info, practice tips, or progress guidance

Quick guide for active MCS families

Logistics, progress reports, and what to focus on between lessons.

Home pick-up is the most popular option, and the most convenient for most families. The instructor arrives at your front door at the scheduled time, greets the student, and (when a parent is around) briefly goes over the lesson plan beforehand and shares progress notes at drop-off.

There is a 15-minute arrival window built into every lesson to account for traffic. Lesson time is always taught in full from the moment the instructor arrives, with no portion shaved off because of a delayed start.

A convenient option on school days or after activities. Students can meet us at or near the parking lot on Mulholland Dr. Our vehicles have a large leaf logo on the side. The instructor will exit to greet your student when safe, or your student can approach and enter directly.

Pick-up and drop-off can sometimes be different locations. For example, picked up at Milken Community School and dropped at home.

Pick-up spot: Los Angeles

After every lesson, your instructor emails a personal written assessment to both student and parent: what was practiced, how it went, and what to work on before the next session. If a parent is available at drop-off, the instructor will take a few minutes to review in person.

Stick to what was covered in the most recent lesson. Your progress report will have specific guidance. The general rule: master that skill before moving to anything more advanced.

  • Quiet residential streets, good for Level 1 review
  • Empty parking lots, good for parking, turning circles, and low-stakes maneuvering
  • Main streets throughout Los Angeles once residential driving is solid

When a student and parent or guardian don't feel ready to practice a skill without an instructor, the best choice is to wait for the next lesson. Don't take on situations that feel unsafe.

We have both male and female instructors on staff, and you can read bios before booking any lesson. Vehicle choice is also flexible: pick between our Toyota Prius and Lexus SUV, both fitted with dual brake controls for instructor safety.

Instructor and vehicle preferences are accommodated based on availability and are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis at time of booking.

Meet all of our instructors

Plenty of students combine both of our test prep options for the strongest setup: a refresher lesson a few days before the road test to sharpen any rough edges, plus our full DMV Test Prep package on the day of the test, where we handle the appointment, bring our licensed and insured vehicle, check the student in, and offer a confidence boost just before the examiner arrives. The two work well in sequence.
