Getting started: Need a permit first
Haven't taken drivers ed or passed the written test yet

Before you can drive: the permit basics

California has a few requirements to take care of before a teen can legally drive with an instructor.

1
Take and pass an online drivers ed course
The DMV won't let a teen take the written test without an approved drivers ed course on file. Our online version is built to the 30-hour state requirement and is fully self-paced. Some students wrap it up in a few sittings; others spread it across a few weeks. Either way, you finish with a certificate to hand to the DMV clerk.
2
Take the DMV written knowledge test
After the course is complete, take the test at any California DMV with a parent or guardian present. The test is identical statewide, so most Malibu families just pick the closest office. (For the road test later it matters more. See our DMV recommendations further down on this page.) If your teen wants targeted help, we run a live Zoom tutoring session focused entirely on the written test.
3
Lock in your lesson dates ahead of time
You don't need a permit in hand to put lesson dates on the calendar. In fact, we encourage MHS families to reserve early. Slots fill up, particularly during finals season and summer, and booking ahead means your teen isn't sitting around waiting weeks after passing the written test. Permit info just needs to be on file by the time of the first lesson. If your student wants to start even sooner, our Student License option lets some students begin training before the permit is issued. Ask us about it during sign up.
💡 Most families get both the permit course and driving lessons together. We offer combo packages that cover everything needed to get licensed in California. MHS students get $10 off with code MHSsave10.

Common permit questions

Can my student start driving lessons before getting a permit?
In most cases you can. Permit information only needs to be on file before the actual lesson, so reserving dates early is smart and keeps your student from waiting once the permit comes through. There is also a Student License path for those who qualify and want to get started sooner. Just ask when you enroll.
How long does the online drivers ed course take?
Plan on a 30-hour equivalent, though the schedule is up to your student. The course is self-paced and saves your progress, so it's easy to do a little at a time from a phone, tablet, or computer. There's no clock ticking between sessions.
What if my student doesn't pass the written test the first time?
Retakes are allowed, so a first-time miss isn't a setback. For students who want targeted help before going back in, we offer a live Zoom permit tutoring session with an instructor focused on the written test.
Which DMV should we use for the permit test?
For the written test it makes no difference. The computerized exam is identical at every office, so the closest DMV to Malibu is usually the easy pick. Where the office actually matters is the road test later, and we cover that in the "Almost ready for the DMV test" section above.

How lessons work for MHS students

Each lesson has its own focus, from quiet residential streets to freeway merges and DMV-road-test practice.

Core

Level 1: Residential foundations

Vehicle basics, steering, braking, right-of-way, and low-traffic Malibu neighborhood streets to build comfort and control.

Core

Level 2: City streets and traffic

Turns, lane changes, speed control, intersections, and main Malibu roads with real traffic flow.

Core

Level 3: Review and freeway intro

Cumulative skill review, first freeway introduction when ready, and a mock DMV assessment to gauge progress.

Advanced

Level 4: Freeway driving

Freeway entry, merging, lane discipline, safe following distance, and I.P.D.E. defensive driving technique.

Advanced

Level 5: Canyons and defensive driving

Real-world driving on roads near Malibu, with a focus on speed control, hazard awareness, and situational judgment.

Test Prep

DMV refresher + day-of test prep

Mock test, common mistake review, confidence building, and use of our vehicle for the road test.

💡 Freeway driving is never introduced before the third lesson. It only happens when the instructor confirms the student is genuinely ready. Parents can request specific skills, but instructors always prioritize what is appropriate for the student's current level.

Where lessons start

We pick up from home or directly from Malibu High School, whichever fits your family's schedule.

🏠 Home pick-up & drop-off

Most common. Our instructors come to you.
For most families, this is the easiest option. We serve Malibu, and more. Your instructor comes to your front door, greets the student and, when available, a parent before and after the lesson to discuss the plan and share progress.

Pick-up and drop-off are usually the same location, but we can sometimes accommodate a nearby alternate drop-off.

Between lessons: progress and practice

What to do between sessions, and how California's requirements shape the process.

📝 Your instructor follows up after each lesson with a written assessment to the student and parent. Expect a clear summary of what was practiced, how the student performed, and the priorities for between-lesson practice.

Before a California teen can apply for a license, two requirements must be met:

  • Minimum 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school (this is what our lesson packages cover)
  • Minimum 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a parent, guardian, or licensed instructor. At least 10 hours must be at night

The 50 hours can be tracked using our free California driving log. Individual or custom lessons with our instructors count toward this total.

Students who want more time with an instructor beyond their standard package can book individual or custom lessons at any point. These are a great option for:

  • Extra practice on specific skills (freeway driving, parking, canyon roads)
  • Logging additional hours toward the 50-hour DMV requirement
  • Night driving practice with a licensed instructor (counts toward the required 10 nighttime hours)
  • Building confidence before the DMV road test

If individual lessons sound useful, mention it when you sign up, or get in touch once your package is completed.

Practice what was covered in the most recent lesson before advancing to anything new.

  • Quiet residential streets with minimal traffic
  • Empty public parking lots (school or shopping center off-hours)
  • Avoid jumping to busier roads or freeway until the instructor confirms the student is ready

Students who put in regular practice between lessons progress noticeably faster. Less time spent revisiting old material means more time learning new skills.

We typically recommend spacing lessons across the 6 months students hold their learner's permit. This allows time for real supervised practice between sessions, and helps each lesson build meaningfully on the last. That said, every family's schedule is different. We work around school, sports, and activities.

It is more common than you might think, and completely understandable. Parents and students should not feel pressure to practice beyond their comfort zone. Wait for the next lesson, and your instructor will assess readiness and pick up from there.

Almost ready for the DMV test: prep and DMV guidance
Lessons done. Need test prep or a car for the road test.

Two ways we help you pass the DMV road test

Two ways to get ready for the road test. Most students use them in combination, but either one works on its own.

💡 The refresher lesson and the day-of test prep are not an either/or choice. Many students do a refresher lesson in the days leading up to the test, then use our full test prep package on the day itself. Together they cover both preparation and execution.

This is a single targeted lesson, usually scheduled 1-2 weeks before the test. The instructor reviews DMV expectations, runs a mock road test, points out any habits that could cost points, and gets the student dialed in before test day.

If you've already booked your own DMV appointment, let us know the location. We'll do our best to practice in that area beforehand, within legal limits. Note that DMVs prohibit driving the actual test route during active business hours, but we know the surrounding roads well and can prepare your student accordingly.

This lesson works great on its own, and pairs naturally with the day-of test prep below.

This is our most hands-off option for families. When you book the DMV Test Prep package, we work with you to find a DMV appointment that fits both your schedule and our instructor and vehicle availability. No DMV scheduling stress for you. If you're using this package, please don't book your own DMV slot separately, as we may not be available for that date.

On the day of the test, we pick the student up roughly an hour ahead of the appointment, warm up with focused practice on roads near the DMV, then drive to the test in our licensed, insured, and test-ready vehicle. The instructor handles check-in, makes sure all paperwork is correct, and gives last-minute tips and encouragement right before the examiner arrives.

No need to provide a car, arrange a ride, or sort out DMV logistics. We take care of everything.

Already a student: pick-up, practice, and next steps
Need pick-up info, practice tips, or progress guidance

Quick guide for active MHS families

Logistics, progress reports, and what to focus on between lessons.

Home pick-up is the most popular option, and the most convenient for most families. The instructor arrives at your front door at the scheduled time, greets the student, and (when a parent is around) briefly goes over the lesson plan beforehand and shares progress notes at drop-off.

There is a 15-minute arrival window built into every lesson to account for traffic. Lesson time is always taught in full from the moment the instructor arrives, with no portion shaved off because of a delayed start.

A convenient option on school days or after activities. Students can meet us at or near the stop sign at Morning View Dr and Merritt Dr. Our vehicles have a large leaf logo on the side. The instructor will exit to greet your student when safe, or your student can approach and enter directly.

Pick-up and drop-off can sometimes be different locations. For example, picked up at Malibu High School and dropped at home.

Pick-up spot: Malibu

Following every lesson, your instructor sends a written assessment by email to both the student and parent. It covers what the student practiced, how it went, and the priorities for between-lesson work. When a parent is at drop-off, the instructor also takes a few minutes to talk through it in person.

Practice what was covered in the most recent lesson, ideally on familiar Malibu streets where stress is lower. The progress report will give you specific guidance, but the rule of thumb is to master that skill before moving on to anything more advanced.

  • Quiet residential streets, good for Level 1 review
  • Empty parking lots, good for parking, turning circles, and low-stakes maneuvering
  • Main streets throughout Malibu once residential driving is solid

If you and your parent or guardian are not comfortable practicing a particular skill between lessons, just wait for the next lesson. Don't push into situations that feel unsafe.

We have both male and female instructors on staff, and you can read bios before booking any lesson. Vehicle choice is also flexible: pick between our Toyota Prius and Lexus SUV, both fitted with dual brake controls for instructor safety.

Instructor and vehicle preferences are accommodated based on availability and are assigned on a first-come, first-served basis at time of booking.

Meet all of our instructors

It is common for students to use both test prep options as a sequence: first a refresher lesson in the days before the road test to polish skills, then our full DMV Test Prep package on test day, when we coordinate the appointment, bring a licensed and insured vehicle, check the student in, and give a final confidence boost before the examiner arrives. Together they cover preparation and execution.
