Where are you in the process?
📋
Getting started: Need a permit first
Haven't taken drivers ed or passed the written test yet

Getting your permit: what you need

California's permit process is simple once you know the order. Here's the path most Woodland Hills families take.

1
Take and pass an online drivers ed course
California law requires an approved online or classroom course before you can take the written test. Our online course is a 30-hour equivalent. Students work entirely at their own pace, spreading it over a few days or a few weeks depending on their schedule and learning style. You'll receive a completion certificate to bring to the DMV.
2
Sit for the DMV written exam
After the course is complete, take the test at any California DMV with a parent or guardian present. The test is identical statewide, so most Woodland Hills families just pick the closest office. (For the road test later it matters more. See our DMV recommendations further down on this page.) If your teen wants targeted help, we run a live Zoom tutoring session focused entirely on the written test.
3
Don't wait on the permit. Book lessons now.
Lesson dates can be booked before the permit is even issued, and we recommend it. Woodland Hills-area slots tend to fill up quickly, especially in spring and summer when school schedules open up. The earlier you reserve, the less time you'll spend waiting after the written test. We just need permit information on file before the lesson takes place. There's also a Student License option for families who want to start training before the permit arrives. Ask us about it when you sign up.
💡 Most families get both the permit course and driving lessons together. We offer combo packages that cover everything needed to get licensed in California. ECR students get $10 off with code ECRsave10.

Common permit questions

Can my student start driving lessons before getting a permit?
In most cases you can. Permit information only needs to be on file before the actual lesson, so reserving dates early is smart and keeps your student from waiting once the permit comes through. There is also a Student License path for those who qualify and want to get started sooner. Just ask when you enroll.
How long does the online drivers ed course take?
Plan on a 30-hour equivalent, though the schedule is up to your student. The course is self-paced and saves your progress, so it's easy to do a little at a time from a phone, tablet, or computer. There's no clock ticking between sessions.
What if my student doesn't pass the written test the first time?
The DMV allows retakes. We offer a live permit test tutoring session via Zoom with one of our instructors for students who want extra help before trying again.
Which DMV should we use for the permit test?
For the written test it makes no difference. The computerized exam is identical at every office, so the closest DMV to Woodland Hills is usually the easy pick. Where the office actually matters is the road test later, and we cover that in the "Almost ready for the DMV test" section above.

Have a permit: lessons, pick-up, and practice areas
Ready to start behind-the-wheel training

Six lesson levels, one road to the DMV test

Skill builds level by level. Students typically complete the 6 or 10-hour program over several weeks, with practice between sessions reinforcing what was learned.

Core

Level 1: Residential foundations

Vehicle basics, steering, braking, right-of-way, and low-traffic Woodland Hills neighborhood streets to build comfort and control.

Core

Level 2: City streets and traffic

Turns, lane changes, speed control, intersections, and main Woodland Hills roads with real traffic flow.

Core

Level 3: Review and freeway intro

Cumulative skill review, first freeway introduction when ready, and a mock DMV assessment to gauge progress.

Advanced

Level 4: Freeway driving

Freeway entry, merging, lane discipline, safe following distance, and I.P.D.E. defensive driving technique.

Advanced

Level 5: Canyons and defensive driving

Real-world driving on roads near Woodland Hills, with a focus on speed control, hazard awareness, and situational judgment.

Test Prep

DMV refresher + day-of test prep

Mock test, common mistake review, confidence building, and use of our vehicle for the road test.

💡 Freeway driving is never introduced before the third lesson. It only happens when the instructor confirms the student is genuinely ready. Parents can request specific skills, but instructors always prioritize what is appropriate for the student's current level.

Where lessons start

We pick up from home or directly from El Camino Real Charter High School, whichever fits your family's schedule.

🏠 Home pick-up & drop-off

Most common. Our instructors come to you.
For most families, this is the easiest option. We serve Woodland Hills, and more. Your instructor comes to your front door, greets the student and, when available, a parent before and after the lesson to discuss the plan and share progress.

Pick-up and drop-off are usually the same location, but we can sometimes accommodate a nearby alternate drop-off.

What to work on between sessions with your instructor

What to do between sessions, and how California's requirements shape the process.

📝 Every lesson ends with a personal written assessment from your instructor, sent to both student and parent. It covers what was worked on, how it went, and the specific skills to focus on before the next session.

Before a California teen can apply for a license, two requirements must be met:

  • Minimum 6 hours of behind-the-wheel training with a licensed driving school (this is what our lesson packages cover)
  • Minimum 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a parent, guardian, or licensed instructor. At least 10 hours must be at night

Practice hours can be tracked using our free California driving log. If your student adds individual or custom lessons with us, those count toward the 50-hour total too.

Students who want more time with an instructor beyond their standard package can book individual or custom lessons at any point. These are a great option for:

  • Extra practice on specific skills (freeway driving, parking, canyon roads)
  • Logging additional hours toward the 50-hour DMV requirement
  • Night driving practice with a licensed instructor (counts toward the required 10 nighttime hours)
  • Building confidence before the DMV road test

Just ask about individual lesson options at sign-up, or anytime after your package is finished.

Practice the skills from the most recent lesson before progressing further. The quieter neighborhoods around Woodland Hills work well for this.

  • Quiet residential streets with minimal traffic
  • Empty public parking lots (school or shopping center off-hours)
  • Avoid jumping to busier roads or freeway until the instructor confirms the student is ready

Students who practice in their own Woodland Hills neighborhoods between lessons typically progress faster. Less time spent reviewing old skills means more time gained on new ones.

We typically recommend spacing lessons across the 6 months students hold their learner's permit. This allows time for real supervised practice between sessions, and helps each lesson build meaningfully on the last. That said, every family's schedule is different. We work around school, sports, and activities.

Completely understandable, and more common than you might think. Families should never feel pressure to practice beyond their comfort level. Simply wait until the next lesson. The instructor will assess readiness and take it from there.

Almost ready for the DMV test: prep and DMV guidance
Lessons done. Need test prep or a car for the road test.

Two ways we help you pass the DMV road test

Most ECR students use one or both of these before test day. They work well together.

💡 These options are not an either/or pick. Most students who want maximum readiness do a refresher lesson during the week before the test and then use our full test prep package on the day itself. Combined, they cover everything from skill polish to logistics.

A focused lesson scheduled 1-2 weeks ahead of test day. Your instructor walks through DMV expectations, runs a mock road test, flags habits that could cost points on the actual exam, and helps build pre-test confidence.

If you have already booked your DMV appointment, share the location with us. We will work to practice nearby beforehand, within legal limits. Keep in mind that DMVs prohibit driving the actual test route during business hours, but our instructors know the roads around local DMV offices well and can prepare your student for similar driving conditions.

This lesson works great on its own, and pairs naturally with the day-of test prep below.

This is our most hands-off option for families. When you book the DMV Test Prep package, we work with you to find a DMV appointment that fits both your schedule and our instructor and vehicle availability. No DMV scheduling stress for you. If you're using this package, please don't book your own DMV slot separately, as we may not be available for that date.

On the day of the test, we pick the student up roughly an hour ahead of the appointment, warm up with focused practice on roads near the DMV, then drive to the test in our licensed, insured, and test-ready vehicle. The instructor handles check-in, makes sure all paperwork is correct, and gives last-minute tips and encouragement right before the examiner arrives.

Families don't need to bring their own car, figure out the drive to the DMV, or untangle paperwork. All of that is handled for you.

Already a student: pick-up, practice, and next steps
Need pick-up info, practice tips, or progress guidance

Mid-program? Pick-up, practice, and what's next

Got a permit and a package? Here's what to expect day to day.

For most families, home pick-up is the most convenient and common choice. Your instructor comes directly to your front door at the scheduled time, greets the student and, when a parent is available, briefly discusses the lesson plan beforehand and shares progress at drop-off.

There is a 15-minute arrival window built into every lesson to account for traffic. Lesson time is always taught in full from the moment the instructor arrives, with no portion shaved off because of a delayed start.

A convenient option on school days or after activities. Students can meet us at or near the tall football field wall on Burbank Blvd near Platt Ave. Our vehicles have a large leaf logo on the side. The instructor will exit to greet your student when safe, or your student can approach and enter directly.

Pick-up and drop-off can sometimes be different locations. For example, picked up at El Camino Real Charter High School and dropped at home.

Each lesson is followed by a personal written assessment, emailed to both the student and parent. The report breaks down what was covered, how the student performed, and what to focus on before next time. If a parent is around at drop-off, your instructor will also walk through it in person for a few minutes.

Practice what your most recent lesson covered. The progress report will spell out specifics, but the general principle is simple: get comfortable with what you just learned before stepping up to anything more advanced.

  • Quiet residential streets, good for Level 1 review
  • Empty parking lots, good for parking, turning circles, and low-stakes maneuvering
  • Main streets throughout Woodland Hills once residential driving is solid

When a student and parent or guardian don't feel ready to practice a skill without an instructor, the best choice is to wait for the next lesson. Don't take on situations that feel unsafe.

We have both male and female instructors on staff, and you can read bios before booking any lesson. Vehicle choice is also flexible: pick between our Toyota Prius and Lexus SUV, both fitted with dual brake controls for instructor safety.

Both instructor and vehicle preferences are honored where possible, subject to availability. Assignments are made on a first-come, first-served basis at the time of booking.

Meet all of our instructors

It is common for students to use both test prep options as a sequence: first a refresher lesson in the days before the road test to polish skills, then our full DMV Test Prep package on test day, when we coordinate the appointment, bring a licensed and insured vehicle, check the student in, and give a final confidence boost before the examiner arrives. Together they cover preparation and execution.
