PERMIT REQUIREMENTS
- Students can apply for a learner's permit after completing just 6
hours of the classroom portion of Driver Ed in a Box or the full 35
hours. Parents will need to log the first 6 hours from Section One
of the program in their "Parent Companion" for the teen to qualify
for a permit. Students must also pass a vision test, road sign test
and written test at the DPS, as well as filling out and supplying the
proper documentation. NOTE: Students may not begin the in-
vehicle training until they receive an instruction permit!
LICENSE REQUIREMENTS
- Students must hold a permit for 6 months and complete the rest
of the Driver Ed in a Box program, which consists of 35 hours for
the classroom program and 50 hours of instruction for the in-vehicle
portion. Upon completion of the entire course, Driver Ed in a Box
will send the student their completion certificate to bring to the DPS.
AGE REQUIREMENTS
- Students may begin the program if they are 14 years old and
under 18 years old. Driver Ed in a Box recommends not starting
the program until two weeks before the teen turns 15.
- Students must wait until age 15 to apply for a permit.
- Students must wait until age 16 to apply for a provisional license
and must have held a permit for at least 6 months.
- After a 12 month period of holding a provisional license with no tickets or
collisions, etc., restrictions are removed.
PARENT REQUIREMENTS
The person teaching the program must meet the following criteria:
- Be either a natural parent, legal guardian, step parent, natural
grandparent or step grandparent.
- Must have a valid driver's license and have NEVER been
convicted of criminal negligent homicide or driving while intoxicated
(DWI) and must not be disabled by mental illness.
- Must have not had their driver's license suspended, revoked or
forfeited for traffic related offenses (moving violations and/or
at-fault accidents) within the passed 3 years. Must have less than six points on their driving record.
NEED ASSISTANCE?
Driver Ed in a Box's knowledgeable and friendly staff is available
to give phone support during the entire licensing process. Also,
Driver Ed in a Box will provide all of the necessary paperwork and
documents you need to bring to the DPS to obtain a permit and a
license.
Note: Texas' minimum requirement for the classroom portion is 32 hours and the
minimum in-vehicle requirement is 34 hours. As an "approved home study parent
taught program" the Driver Ed in a Box program exceeds these minimums so that
the teen is supplied with more than enough education in each of these categories.
